USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 13, 2010

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.)

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Travis Murphy, Methodist - The sophomore quarterback from North Augusta, South Carolina threw four touchdowns in a 26-21 win over Guilford. Murphy was 17-of-24 passing, averaging 11.8 yards per completion, with no interceptions. He also carried the ball 13 times for 39 yards in the win. Also Nominated: Rico Wallace, Shenandoah; Ryan Roach, Maryville; Antwan Thorpe, Greensboro.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
          Allen Stallings, Greensboro - The Manteo, North Carolina junior linebacker had a game-high 14 tackles in a 28-6 loss to Emory & Henry. Stallings accounted for a game-high seven solo tackles and seven assisted take downs. He also totaled two tackles for ten yards lost, one sack for a loss of eight yards and one pass break-up in the loss. Also Nominated: Tazmon Foster, N.C. Wesleyan; Blake Campbell, Shenandoah; Tanner Caylor, Maryville; Jake Hunt, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
           Brian Lybert, Christopher Newport - The junior midfielder from Honolulu, Hawaii helped the Captains to a 2-0 record last week by scoring two goals and adding five assists for nine points. In a 5-0 win over regionally-ranked Rowan, Lybert was credited with an assist on four of the Captain's five goals. In a 3-1 win over Kean, Lybert scored two goals, his first of the day proved to be the game-winner, and also assisted on the Captain's first score of the match. Also Nominated: Richard Bjornander, Averett; Mark Wielitzka, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Kyle Rose, Christopher Newport- The sophomore defender from Charlottesville, Virginia helped anchor a defense which allowed just one goal in a 2-0 week for the Captains. In a 5-0 win over regionally-ranked Rowan the Captain defense did not allow a shot on goal. In a 3-1 win over Kean, opened the match's scoring with a goal in the eighth minute. Also Nominated: Chris Taylor, Ferrum.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Jessi Dennis, Shenandoah - The Eldersburg, Maryland junior forward scored two game-winning goals last week as the Hornets posted a 2-0 record. In a 1-0 win over Hood, Dennis' game-winner came in the 68th minute. In another 1-0 win, this time over Southern Virginia, Dennis knocked in the eventual game-winning goal in the ninth minute. Also Nominated: Ringa Remes, Averett; Kara Pegram, Ferrum.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Samantha Lupo, Averett - The Huntington Station, New York junior goalkeeper earned a 2-0 record last week for the Cougars. In 147 minutes between the posts, Lupo did not allow a goal while making six saves. In a 1-0 win over Guilford, Lupo went the distance and made six saves to earn the shutout. In a 6-1 win over Sweet Briar, Lupo did not allow a goal in 57 minutes played and was not forced to make any saves. Also Nominated: Lauren Morris, Shenandoah; Erica Gaughan, Mary Baldwin; Katie Allegro, Greensboro; Katie Hodkinson, Ferrum.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Jessie Heavenrich, Christopher Newport - The junior setter from Cambria, California averaged 11.7 assists, 3.3 digs, 0.5 kills and 0.5 blocks per set last week as the Captains posted a 4-0 record. In a 3-0 win over Puget Sound, Heavenrich contributed 37 assists, eight digs, two kills, one service ace and one block. In a 3-0 victory over 22nd-ranked Trinity, Heavenrich recorded a double-double of 34 assists and 13 digs. She also added five kills and one block in the win. In a 3-0 win over Pacific, Heavenrich notched her second double-double of the week with 28 assists and ten digs. She also added three kills, one service ace and one block in the victory. Finally, in a 3-0 win over 14th-ranked Southwestern, Heavenrich tallied 38 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Also Nominated: Brooke Hensley, Averett; Cori Spade, Meredith; Sha McDuffie, Greensboro; Rachel Maki, Shenandoah; Mackenzie Tingle, N.C. Wesleyan.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Kelly George, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior libero from Derwood, Maryland averaged 5.9 digs per set last week as the Bishops posted a 3-2 record. In a 3-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan, George recorded 14 digs and one service ace. In a  3-1 loss to Capital, George contributed 28 digs and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite, George tallied ten digs. In a 3-0 loss to Frostburg, George totaled 19 digs and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-2 win over Gallaudet, George contributed 31 digs. Also Nominated: Rebecca Mayberry, Mary Baldwin; Paige Aaron, Averett; Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport; Hillary McPhatter, Methodist; Danielle Simpson, Shenandoah; MaryBeth Finegan, Meredith.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Kristyn Zeiler, Methodist- The senior from Lutherville, Maryland led the Monarchs at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational last week by finishing fifth in the 4K event. Zeiler finished the race in a time of 14:52 to help the Monarchs to a fourth place finish.

 

Rookies of the Week

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Jordan Vann, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman quarterback from Fayetteville, North Carolina threw for 238 yards in a 21-19 loss to Hampden-Sydney. Vann was 28-for-47 with two interceptions through the air. On the ground, Vann rushed for 47 yards on 13 carries. He scored a touchdown with 45 seconds remaining that pulled the Bishops to within two points. Also Nominated: Travis Felder, Maryville.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Navahri Holden, Methodist - The freshman linebacker from Lake Placid, Florida had six solo tackles in a 26-21 win over Guilford. Of his six total tackles, two resulted in a loss of four yards. Holden also added a pass break-up in the win. Also Nominated: Josh Rogers, Shenandoah; Travis Hartman, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Mark-Antony Liljeklev, Averett - The freshman midfielder from Gothenburg, Sweden scored three goals in a 2-1 week for the Cougars. In a 9-1 win over Emory & Henry, Liljeklev scored the match's first goal in the second minute then added another tally in the 57th minute. In a 3-2 victory over LaGrange, Liljeklev tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 40th minute. Finally, in a 3-1 loss to Piedmont, Liljeklev was held scoreless but did manage one shot. Also Nominated: Woody Wilder, Greensboro; Alex Makumbi, Christopher Newport; Bayron Gudiel, N.C. Wesleyan; Aaron Gustine, Ferrum.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Felicia Pajamaki, Averett - The Tullinge, Sweden freshman midfielder three goals in a 2-0 week for the Cougars. In a 1-0 victory over Guilford, Pajamaki scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 11th minute. In a 6-1 win over Sweet Briar, Pajamaki tallied the team's first and fourth goals of the match. Also Nominated: Emma O'Reilly, Christopher Newport.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
          Dana Sandknop, Greensboro - The freshman setter from Greensboro, North Carolina averaged 10.1 assists, 2.0 digs and 0.5 kills per set last week as The Pride posted a 4-1 record. In a 3-0 win at Randolph, Sandknop recorded 25 assists, six digs, three service aces, one kill and one block. In a 3-0 victory over Guilford, Sandknop contributed 25 assists, six kills, six digs, one service ace and one block. In a 3-1 win over Piedmont, Sandknop tallied 55 assists, seven digs and three blocks. In a 3-1 loss to Randolph-Macon, Sandknop totaled 33 assists, nine digs, two blocks and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-0, non-conference, win over Peace, Sandknop contributed 34 assists, six digs, one kill and one service ace. Also Nominated: Brittany Eubanks, Mary Baldwin; Allison Sparks, Averett; Lauren Bramble, Methodist; Leanne Burton, Meredith.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Sophia Stone, Mary Baldwin - The freshman from Pacific Palisades, California helped the Fighting Squirrels to a fourth place finish at the Washington & Lee Invitational last week. Stone placed second out of 85 runners with a time of 24:55 on the 6K course. Also Nominated: Abby Fuquay, Meredith.
