USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 31, 2011

Players of the Week

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
          Matt Dougherty, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior guard from Ayden, North Carolina led the Bishops to a 95-81 victory over USA South foe Shenandoah in the team’s only action last week. In the win, Dougherty scored 23 points, collected four steals, dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds. Also Nominated: Derek Mitchell, Ferrum; Conley Taylor, Christopher Newport.

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
           Chelsie Schweers, Christopher Newport - The Chesapeake, Virginia senior guard averaged 31.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game as the Captains, ranked 11th nationally, compiled a 3-0 record last week all versus USA South competition. In a 77-36 win over Mary Baldwin, Schweers totaled 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. In a 79-35 victory over Peace, Schweers contributed 29 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal. Finally, in an 81-58 win over Meredith, Schweers tallied 45 points which is the second highest single-game point total in school history. Additionally, she made 11 three pointers which broke her own program and USA South records. Schweers also added six rebounds, four assists and one steal in the win. Also Nominated: Sierra Edwards, Shenandoah; Samantha Urquhart, N.C. Wesleyan; Megan Rahn, Meredith; Ashley Washington, Averett; Kristen Keith, Ferrum; Danielle Duncan, Greensboro.

 

Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
           Tra Benefield, Christopher Newport - The Richmond, Virginia freshman guard/forward tallied a double-double in a 75-52 win over USA South foe Shenandoah in the team's only action last week. In the win, Benefield scored 26 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked one shot. Also Nominated: Damian Dixon, Greensboro.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
          Shea Smith, Ferrum - The Callaway, Virginia freshman guard averaged 9.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game as the Panthers compiled a 1-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 49-46 loss to Averett, Smith scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out three assists and collected one steal. In a 71-66 win over Methodist, Smith totaled seven points, four assists, two steals, one rebound and one block.
