USA South Athletes of the Week - April 4, 2011

Players of the Week

Baseball Player of the Week
          Trey Such, Methodist - The junior catcher from Sanford, North Carolina hit .600 (9-for-15) with ten RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles and three home runs in a 4-0 week for the Monarchs. In a doubleheader sweep of Purchase, Such was a combined 4-for-8 with two runs scored, two RBI and two doubles. In a two-game sweep of USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Such was a combined 5-for-7 with eight RBI, five runs scored and three home runs. Also Nominated: Michael Manfro, Greensboro; Connor Madden, Christopher Newport; Zach Alexander, N.C. Wesleyan; Clint DeHaven, Shenandoah.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
           Ryan Fleischmann, Christopher Newport - The sophomore from Williamsburg, Virginia did not allow a run in 3.1 total innings of relief in two appearances versus USA South rival, top-ranked Shenandoah last week for the Captains. In a 12-7 game-one loss, Fleischmann earned a no-decision as tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one walk. In a 5-3 game-two win, Fleischmann came into the game in the top of the eighth inning with two on and one out. He proceeded to get out of the jam and earn the victory by pitching the final 1.2 innings of the contest, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Softball Player of the Week
           Jessie Atkinson, Christopher Newport - The senior third baseman from Mechanicsville, Virginia hit .542 (13-for-24) with 13 RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and five walks as the Captains posted an 8-0 record last week all versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah, Atkinson was a combined 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run scored, one double and two walks. In a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin, Atkinson was a combined 6-for-9 with eight RBI, four runs scored and two home runs. In a doubleheader sweep of Peace, Atkinson was a combined 4-for-7 with three RBI, one run scored and one home run. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of Meredith, Atkinson was a combined 2-for-4 with one run scored, one double and three walks. Also Nominated: Jenna Rudder, Averett; Jolisa Jones, Shenandoah; Darci Martin, Methodist.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
           Whitney Haller, Christopher Newport - The Chester, Virginia sophomore accumulated a 4-0 record in four appearances, all versus USA South competition, last week for the Captains. In 22 innings pitched, Haller allowed two runs, one of which was earned, eight hits with three walks and 19 strikeouts. In a 3-0 win over Shenandoah, Haller tossed a five-hit shutout with one walk and four strikeouts. In a 20-3, five-inning, win over Mary Baldwin, Haller pitched three innings and allowed one run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts. In a 9-1, five-inning, victory over Peace, Haller went the distance and allowed one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Meredith, Haller tossed a no-hitter and allowed just one batter to reach on an error with seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Brooke Over, Shenandoah; Alex Bass, Methodist.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
           Meghan Harkey, Christopher Newport - The Purcellville, Virginia senior attacker tallied ten points on two goals and eight assists in a 20-3 win over USA South foe Methodist in the Captains' only action last week. Harkey also added three groundballs in the victory. Also Nominated: Layne Woodard, Greensboro; Brooke Hewartson, Ferrum.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
           Lisa Cantrell, Ferrum - The Catlett, Virginia senior goalkeeper compiled a 2-0 record, including one shutout, last week for the Panthers. Cantrell spent 93:16 minutes in goal and made ten saves while allowing 12 goals last week. In an 18-16, overtime, win over Bridgewater, Cantrell made six saves. In an 11-0 win over Randolph, Cantrell stopped all four shots she saved to help Ferrum earn the program's first-ever shutout. Also Nominated: Kaitlin Quigley, Christopher Newport.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
          Dusty Nelson, Christopher Newport - The senior from Bemus Point, New York posted a 3-0 singles record and a 2-1 doubles mark last week for the Captains. Nelson posted singles wins at the number-five, number-one and number-three spots over opponents from Averett, Ferrum and Roanoke respectfully. In doubles action, Nelson teamed with Eric Shulman to post one victory at both number-one and number-two doubles over opponents from Ferrum and Averett, respectfully. Also Nominated: Alexey Rumyantsev, N.C. Wesleyan; Matthew Taylor, Methodist; David Lembke, Averett.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
          Sarah Stafford, Christopher Newport - The sophomore from Midlothian, Virginia posted a 3-0 record at the number-one singles position and a 2-1 mark at the number-one doubles position last week for the Captains. Stafford earned straight-set victories over opponents from USA South foes N.C. Wesleyan, Averett and Ferrum. In doubles action, Stafford teamed with Marion Gloor to earn wins over opponents from Averett and Ferrum. Also Nominated: Katherine Meindl, Methodist; Bristy Parker, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

Rookies of the Week

Baseball Rookie of the Week
          Sergio Davis, Methodist - The freshman outfielder from Fayetteville, North Carolina hit .563 (9-for-16) with seven runs scored, five RBI, one double, one sacrifice hit and one stolen base as the Monarchs posted a 4-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Purchase, Davis was a combined 7-for-7 with five runs scored, two RBI, one double and one stolen base. In a two-game sweep of USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Davis was a combined 2-for-9 with three RBI and two runs scored. Also Nominated: Billy Steel, Christopher Newport; Eddie McGrath, Ferrum.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
          Andrew Womble, Methodist - The Elizabeth City, North Carolina freshman earned a win in a 7-2 victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan in one of his two appearances last week for the Monarchs. In the win, Womble tossed six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. In his other appearance last week, Womble tossed an inning of scoreless relief in a 15-0 win over Purchase.

Softball Rookie of the Week
          Kristina McLaughlin, Christopher Newport - The freshman outfielder/designated player from Virginia Beach, Virginia hit .400 (10-for-25) with eight runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, two walks and one stolen base as the Captains posted an 8-0 record last week all versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Shenandoah, McLaughlin was a combined 2-for-6 with three runs scored and one walk. In a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin, McLaughlin was a combined 4-for-6 with three runs scored, two RBI, one double and one walk. In a doubleheader sweep of Peace, McLaughlin was a combined 2-for-6 with one run scored, one run batted in and one double. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of Meredith, McLaughlin was a combined 2-for-7 with one run scored and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Heather Sink, Shenandoah.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
          Candace Piner, Methodist - The freshman from Bolivia, North Carolina posted a 1-0 record last week in two appearances versus USA South competition for the Monarchs. She totaled ten innings pitched and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on 16 hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. In a 10-2, five-inning, win over Meredith, Piner went the distance and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts. In a 4-3, nine-inning win over Ferrum, Piner earned a no-decision by pitching five innings, allowing one run on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
          Samantha Sisson, Shenandoah - The Keuka Park, New York freshman midfielder tallied 15 points on 12 goals and three assists as the Hornets posted a 1-1 record last week. Sisson also contributed 15 draw controls, seven groundballs and five caused turnovers last week. In a 19-8 win over Oberlin, Sisson tallied six goals, one assist, seven draw controls, five groundballs and three caused turnovers. In a 15-14 loss to USA South foe Greensboro, Sisson totaled six goals, two assists, eight draw controls, two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Also Nominated: Courtney Hamm, Ferrum; Jessica Singer, Christopher Newport.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
          Viktor Selander, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Lidkoping, Sweden posted a 2-0 record at the number-one singles position and a 1-0 mark at the number-two doubles slot last week for the Bishops. Selander earned his singles wins over top-players from Ferrum and Greensboro. In doubles action, Selander teamed with Clayton Sonn to defeat their opponents from Christopher Newport. Also Nominated: Austin Wang, Methodist; Josef Manilla, Christopher Newport.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
          Puja Patel, Meredith - The freshman from Snowhill, North Carolina posted a 2-0 record at the number-one singles and number-three doubles flights last week for the Avenging Angels. In singles play, Patel earned wins over top-players from Greensboro and Averett. In doubles action, Patel teamed with Zannah Webster to defeat their opponents from Greensboro and Averett. Also Nominated: Jodi Noland, Christopher Newport; Laura Baker, Methodist.
