USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 30, 2012

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
          Marcus Mayo, Ferrum - The senior guard from Lexington, Virginia led the Panthers to a 2-0 record versus USA South competition last week by averaging 27.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 4.0 assists per game. In an 83-79 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Mayo totaled 30 points, seven steals, four rebounds and four assists. In a 76-70 victory over Greensboro, Mayo contributed 25 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Also Nominated: Donald Anderson, Greensboro; Mark Jernigan, Methodist; Marquis Scott, Averett; Mike Cherry, Christopher Newport.

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
          Sam Akers, Shenandoah - The Winchester, Virginia sophomore guard led the Hornets to a 2-0 record versus USA South competition by averaging 22.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. In a 77-68 win over Ferrum, Akers totaled a career-high 32 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and one block to help the Hornets snap a 21-game losing streak versus the Panthers. In a 59-48 victory over Averett, Akers scored 12 points, grabbed two rebounds, dished out two assists and collected two steals. Also Nominated: Liz Martin, Averett; Tesla Akers, Ferrum; Megan Rahn, Meredith; Jenna Cabe, Greensboro; Tia Perry, Christopher Newport; Jackie Lyles, Methodist.

Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
          Mike Cherry, Christopher Newport - The Lewiston, North Carolina freshman guard helped the Captains to a 2-1 record last week by averaging 20.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.7 assists per game. In an 81-65 win over Salisbury, Cherry tallied 18 points, three rebounds and one steal. In a 91-72 victory over USA South rival Averett, Cherry totaled 17 points, four assists, four steals and one rebound. Finally in an 89-74 loss to nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan, Cherry scored a career-high 26 points while adding four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Also Nominated: Sunil Ram, Averett; Ross Heyl, Shenandoah.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
          Holly Chittenden, Shenandoah - The Boyds, Maryland freshman forward helped the Hornets to a 2-0 record versus USA South competition last week by averaging 11.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. In a 77-68 win over Ferrum, Chittenden totaled eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals to help the Hornets snap a 21-game losing streak versus the Panthers. In a 59-48 victory over Averett, Chittenden notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also added two assists in the win. Also Nominated: Courtney Woods, Methodist; Essence Burns, Averett; Jacole Hairston, Ferrum; Keyanka Bailey, Meredith; Camry Green, Christopher Newport.
