USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 10, 2011

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Dontavious Gilbert, Ferrum - The sophomore running back from Rocky Mount, Virginia totaled 104 yards rushing and one touchdown in a 21-10 win over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan. Gilbert carried the ball 11 times, good for a 9.5 yard average. He also added 23 receiving yards on two catches in the victory. Also Nominated: Kirkland Brown, Averett; Dexter Russell, Greensboro; Rico Wallace, Shenandoah; Markeese Stovall, Christopher Newport.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
          Allen Stallings, Greensboro - The Manteo, North Carolina senior linebacker did all he could as he compiled 20 total tackles in a 42-21 loss to USA South foe Averett. The 20 take downs are the third most in a single game in program history. Stallings contributed 12 solo tackles and eight assisted take downs. He had two tackles for a loss of three total yards and added a pass breakup. Also Nominated: Corey Scruggs, Averett; Tazmon Foster, N.C. Wesleyan; Tae Motley, Ferrum; Navahri Holden, Methodist; Brandon Martin, Shenandoah; Jamie Owen, Maryville; Mike King, Christopher Newport.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
          Marcus Mayo, Ferrum - The Lexington, Virginia senior quarterback/punt returner scored a touchdown on a 78 yard return to tie the score, 7-7, in the second quarter of a 21-10 victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan. He also added a return of five yards in the win. Also Nominated: Brent Skipper, Averett.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
          Brian Lybert, Christopher Newport - The senior from Honolulu, Hawaii helped the Captains to a 2-0 record last week by scoring three goals and adding three assists. In a 4-1 win over St. Mary's, Lybert assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the 56th minute then scored an insurance goal 12 minutes later. In a 7-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark, Lybert assisted on the eventual game-winning goal in the sixth minute then scored two goals of his own in the 20th and 62nd minutes. Also Nominated: Owen White, N.C. Wesleyan; Richard Bjornander, Averett; Joe Peluso, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Nate Barker, Averett - The junior goalkeeper from Cave Creek, Arizona tallied two shutouts in a 2-0 week for the Cougars. In 180 minutes in net, Barker collected eight saves. In a 3-0 win over Randolph-Macon, Barker made two saves. In a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Shenandoah, Barker stopped six shots. Also Nominated: Alec Faulkner, Christopher Newport. 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Amber Womack, Shenandoah - The Perry Hall, Maryland junior forward helped the Hornets to a 3-0 record last week as she scored two goals and added one assist. In a 3-1 win over Southern Virginia, Womack tallied the game-tying goal in the 50th minute then assisted on an insurance goal in the 72nd minute. In a 2-0 win over USA South foe Meredith, Womack was held scoreless but did manage two shots. Finally, in a 12-1 win over USA South rival Peace, Womack scored the eventual game-winning goal in the sixth minute. Also Nominated: Meredith Kelly, Greensboro; Annika Rindestedt, Averett; LaQuinta Garrett, Ferrum.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Gabby Dobbs, Ferrum - The Clifton Forge, Virginia senior defender helped secure the Panther back line in two wins over USA South opponents last week. The Panther defense allowed one goal in a 2-1 win over Greensboro and posted a 3-0 shutout of Methodist. Also Nominated: Erica Gaughan, Mary Baldwin; Samantha Lupo, Averett.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Jalesty Washington, Methodist - The senior outside hitter from Dunn, North Carolina posted a .333 hitting percentage and averaged 3.3 kills, 2.9 digs and 0.7 blocks per set last week as the Monarchs posted a 3-1 record. In a 3-0 win over Roanoke, Washington recorded 11 digs, nine kills, two service aces and one block. In a 3-1 loss to Washington & Lee, Washington notched a double-double of 12 kills and ten digs. She also added three blocks and one service ace in the loss. In a 3-0 victory over Hollins, Washington tallied a double-double of 12 kills and 11 digs. She also added three blocks and one service ace in the win. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Randolph, Washington ten digs, five assists, two blocks and one service ace. Also Nominated: Lauren Naugle, Peace; Haley Smith, Shenandoah; Kayla Trippeer, Ferrum; Cori Spade, Meredith; Allison Sparks, Averett; Bailey Jensen, Christopher Newport.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport - The junior libero from Clifton, Virginia averaged 5.2 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 3-1 record. In a 3-2 loss to Randolph-Macon, Hogge posted 25 digs. In a 3-1 win over 11th-ranked Juniata, Hogge tallied 25 digs, two assists and one kill. In a 3-0 victory over Mary Washington, Hogge totaled 20 kills, two service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-2 win over Salisbury, Hogge contributed 19 digs and two service aces. Also Nominated: MaryBeth Finegan, Meredith; Rachel Evans, Methodist; Mackenzie Averett, Averett.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Craig Cicero, Methodist - The junior from Perry, New York placed 64th out of 214 runners last week at the Walt Disney Cross Country Classic. Cicero completed the 8K course in a time of 27:55, helping the Monarchs to a 22nd place team finish. Also Nominated: Joe Adkins, Averett.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Jeff Redd, Averett - The freshman running back from Danville, Virginia tallied his first collegiate 100-yard rushing game and touchdown in a 42-21 victory over USA South rival Greensboro. Redd ran 18 times for 129 yards, good for a 7.2-yard average. Also Nominated: Marcus Morrast, Christopher Newport; Ryan Throndset, Greensboro; Max Reber, Methodist.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Arron Johnson, Averett - The freshman linebacker from Indian Trail, North Carolina tallied three solo tackles in a 42-21 win over USA South foe Greensboro. One of Johnson's take downs was a seven yard sack. Also Nominated: Zach Naylor, Maryville.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Jalon Brown, Christopher Newport - The freshman midfielder from Yorktown, Virginia notched two goals in a 2-0 week for the Captains. In a 4-1 win over St. Mary's, Brown scored the first and final goals of the match, in the sixth and 74 minutes, respectfully. In a 7-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark, Brown was held scoreless but did manage one shot. Also Nominated: Nathan Brown, Averett; Omar Kanten, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Rachel Didier, Meredith - The Cary, Illinois freshman midfielder scored a hat-trick of three goals and added one assist in an 8-1 win over USA South foe Mary Baldwin. Didier's second goal of the match came in the 24th minute and was the eventual game-winner. In the Avenging Angel's only other action of last week, a 2-0 loss to Shenandoah, Didier was held without a shot. Also Nominated: Taylor Oehm, Shenandoah; Megan Webb, Ferrum.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
         Nicole Barringer, Averett - The freshman setter from Landis, North Carolina averaged 7.3 assists, 1.1 kills and 1.0 digs per set last week as the Cougars posted a 2-2 versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Hollins, Barringer recorded 17 assists, two kills, two service aces, one dig and one block in just two sets played. In a 3-1 loss to Washington & Lee, Barringer totaled 19 assists, three kills and two digs. In a 3-0 loss to Randolph, Barringer notched 15 assists, four digs and two kills in just two sets played. Finally, in a 3-1 win over Roanoke, Barringer did not see any action.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Lynn Welch, Averett - The freshman from Madison, Virginia placed 11th out of 44 runners last week at the Winston-Salem State Wilbur Ross Challenge. Welch completed the 5K course in a time of 17:52.
