USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 17, 2011

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.)

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Brad Martz, Shenandoah - The junior running back from Keymar, Maryland totaled 191 yards rushing and one touchdown in a 28-21 win over USA South foe Maryville. Martz carried the ball 41 times, good for a 4.7 yard average. He also added eight receiving yards on one catch in the victory. Also Nominated: Greg Edwards, N.C. Wesleyan; Markeese Stovall, Christopher Newport; Dexter Russell, Greensboro.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
           Allen Stallings, Greensboro - The Manteo, North Carolina senior linebacker compiled 17 total tackles in a 31-19 loss to USA South foe Greensboro. Stallings contributed nine solo tackles and eight assisted take downs. He assisted on one sack that resulted in a loss of three yards. Also Nominated: Jacob Berwind, Maryville; Albert Brown, Averett; Josh Rogers, Shenandoah; Daniel Bowen, Christopher Newport; Jacob Hunt, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
          Brian Lybert, Christopher Newport - The senior from Honolulu, Hawaii helped the Captains to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South opposition by scoring two goals. In a 4-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Lybert scored the first, and thus eventual game-winning, goal in the 17th minute. In a 3-0 victory over Methodist, Lybert scored the second goal of the contest in the 34th minute. Also Nominated: Magnus Ferngren, Averett; Joe Peluso, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Justin Wolfe, Christopher Newport - The senior goalkeeper from Williamsburg, Virginia tallied two shutouts in a 2-0 week versus USA South competition for the Captains. In 180 minutes in net, Wolfe collected three saves. In a 4-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Wolfe needed to make just one save. In a 3-0 victory over Methodist, Wolfe stopped both shots he faced. Also Nominated: Nate Barker, Averett; Woody Wilder, Greensboro. 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Pernilla Milton, Averett - The Gothenburg, Sweden sophomore forward helped the Cougars to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition as she scored three goals and added three assists. In a 4-1 win over Meredith, Milton scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 45th minute then assisted on an insurance goal in the 46th minute. In a 10-0 win over Peace, Milton totaled two goals and two assists. Also Nominated: Kendall Dishaw, Christopher Newport; Sarah Lang, Greensboro; Kristin Habig, Methodist.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Sarah Hopkins, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina defender tallied two goals and one assist in a 1-0-1 week versus USA South competition. In a 6-1 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Hopkins assisted on The Pride's fourth goal before scoring the fifth on her own. In a 1-1 tie with Christopher Newport, Hopkins scored in the 88th minute to tie the game. Also Nominated: Megan Richard, Christopher Newport; Samantha Lupo, Averett.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Mackenzie Tingle, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior setter from Clearbrook, Virginia averaged 9.5 assists, 3.2 digs and 1.7 kills per set last week as the Bishops posted a 3-0 record, all versus USA South competition. In a 3-1 win over Meredith, Tingle recorded a triple-double of 45 assists, 12 kills and 11 digs. She also added three blocks and two service aces in the win. In a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah, Tingle totaled 17 assists, seven digs and one kill. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Peace, Tingle tallied a double-double of 33 assists and 14 digs. She also added four kills and one block in the victory. Also Nominated: Lauren Bramble, Methodist; Christie Fellows, Christopher Newport; Allison Sparks, Averett.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Paige Aaron, Averett - The junior libero from Danville, Virginia averaged 6.5 digs and 0.9 service aces per set last week as the Cougars posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Peace, Aaron posted 15 digs and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over New York Polytechnic, Aaron tallied 24 digs, five service aces and one assist. In a 3-0 win over Stevens, Aaron contributed 17 digs and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-2 loss to New Paltz State, Aaron totaled 42 digs, six service aces, one kill and one assist. Also Nominated: Rachel Evans, Methodist; Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport; Shana Ayers, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Ray Gamache, Christopher Newport - The junior from Burlington, Vermont placed 11th out of 47 runners last week at the William & Mary Invitational. Gamache completed the 8K course in a time of 26:05. Also Nominated: Craig Cicero, Methodist.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Sophia Stone, Mary Baldwin - The sophomore from Pacific Palisades, California placed 1st out of 25 runners last week at the Hood College Invitational. Stone completed the 5K course in a time of 19:12. Also Nominated: Katie Ballard, Methodist; Morgan Youd, Meredith; Jade Zaharoff, Christopher Newport.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Melvin Burston, Maryville - The freshman quarterback from Bradenton, Florida came off the bench and led the Scots to three touchdowns in a 28-21 loss to USA South foe Shenandoah. Burston scored two rushing touchdowns and one passing score. On the ground, Burston ran the ball 13 times for a total of 64 yards. Through the air, Burston completed 10-of-21 passes for 151 yards. Also Nominated: Jeff Redd, Averett; Max Reber, Methodist; Warren Scott, Greensboro; Marcus Morrast, Christopher Newport; Jacques Alston, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Keltcey Richardson, Methodist - The freshman cornerback from Tarboro, North Carolina tallied eight total tackles and a pass breakup in a 37-17 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Richardson tallied four solo tackles and four assisted take downs. Also Nominated: Zach Naylor, Maryville; Calvin Williams, Averett.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Logan Paussa, Greensboro - The freshman defender from Cary, North Carolina scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Shenandoah in the team's only action of last week. Paussa tallied the final two scores of the contest in the 56th and 61st minutes, respectfully. Also Nominated: Kevin Vigebo, Averett.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Sarah Perrett, Christopher Newport - The South Riding, Virginia freshman midfielder scored one goal in a 1-0-1 week versus USA South competition for the Captains. In a 3-1 win over Methodist, Perrett tallied the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. In a 1-1 tie with Greensboro, Perrett was held scoreless but did manage one shot. Also Nominated: Allison Gibson, Greensboro; Mathilda Hansson, Averett.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
         Nicole Barringer, Averett - The freshman setter from Landis, North Carolina averaged 10.8 assists and 2.2 digs per set last week as the Cougars posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival Peace, Barringer posted 33 assists, nine digs, five kills and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over New York Polytechnic, Barringer tallied 40 assists, nine digs, three service aces, one kill and one block. In a 3-0 win over Stevens, Barringer contributed 23 assists, two digs and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-2 loss to New Paltz State, Barringer totaled 23 assists, four digs, one kill and one service ace.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Lynn Welch, Averett - The freshman from Madison, Virginia placed 15th out of 39 runners last week at the North Carolina Collegiate Championships. Welch completed the 8K course in a time of 29:12.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Caitlin Dorantich, Meredith - The freshman from Newport, North Carolina placed 122nd out of 201 runners last week at the Royal Cross Country Challenge. Dorantich completed the 5K course in a time of 21:10. Also Nominated: Kenesha Bigelow, Methodist.
