USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 24, 2011

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Marcus Mayo, Ferrum - The senior quarterback from Lexington, Virginia accumulated 257 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in a 66-23 win over USA South foe Greensboro. Mayo was 10-of-17 passing for 203 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Mayo rushed 13 times for 54 yards and two touchdowns. Also Nominated: Carl Joseph, Shenandoah; Evan Moog, Christopher Newport.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
           Dayn Washburn, Christopher Newport - The Stafford, Virginia senior defensive end helped the Captains defeat USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan 51-33. Washburn compiled six total tackles, five of which were solo take downs. He totaled three tackles for a loss, two of which were sacks. Washburn forced two fumbles and recovered one of fumble. Finally, Washburn added two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry in the win. Also Nominated: Corey Scruggs, Averett; Sterling Smith, N.C. Wesleyan; Tae Motley, Ferrum; Jacob Berwind, Maryville.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
           Dwayne Hollis, N.C. Wesleyan - The Newport News, Virginia junior kick returner scored a 96-yard touchdown in a 51-33 loss to USA South rival Christopher Newport. Hollis also added a 17-yard return and nine total tackles on defense in the defeat. Also Nominated: Rodney Beasley, Greensboro; Bobby Owens, Averett.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
          Joe Peluso, Greensboro - The senior forward from Ashburn, Virginia helped The Pride to a 1-0-1 record last week by scoring two goals and adding one assist. In a 4-3, overtime, win over USA South foe Averett, Peluso scored in the 56th minute, then again in the 81st minute to eventually force overtime. In the extra period, Peluso assisted on the game-winning goal. In a scoreless tie versus Washington & Lee, Peluso managed four shots. Also Nominated: Richard Bjornander, Averett; Steven Farmer, Christopher Newport.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Alberto Faisca, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior goalkeeper from Brunswick, Maryland earned a 1-0-1 record last week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In 200 minutes in net, Faisca allowed one goal and collected 11 saves. In a 3-1 win over Methodist, Faisca made nine saves. In a scoreless tie versus Averett, Faisca collected the shutout by stopping two shots. Also Nominated: Nate Barker, Averett; Woody Wilder, Greensboro; David Haas, Christopher Newport.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Emma O'Reilly, Christopher Newport - The Springfield, Virginia sophomore forward scored two goals in a 2-0 week for the Captains versus USA South competition. In a 5-1 win over Meredith, O'Reilly scored the match's first goal in the third minute then closed the scoring in the 69th minute with an insurance goal. In a 7-0 win over Peace, O'Reilly did not see any action. Also Nominated: Annika Rindestedt, Averett; Tiffany Walters, Greensboro; Amber Womack, Shenandoah; LaQunita Garrett, Ferrum.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Kat Terza, Shenandoah - The Manassas, Virginia goalkeeper tallied two shutouts in a 2-0 week for the Hornets versus USA South competition. In 180 minutes in goal, Terza stopped all seven shots she faced. In a 1-0 win over Ferrum, Terza stopped six shots. In a 2-0 win over Averett, Terza needed to make just one save. Also Nominated: Sarah Hopkins, Greensboro; Samantha Lupo, Averett; Caitlyn Deaton, Ferrum; Emily Brown, Christopher Newport.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Bailey Jensen, Christopher Newport - The junior middle blocker from Ashburn, Virginia compiled a .547 attack percentage and averaged 3.7 kills and 1.0 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 4-0 record. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Jensen totaled 13 kills, five digs, three blocks and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Washington & Lee, Jensen contributed 15 kills, four digs, two assists and one block. In a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Meredith, Jensen tallied eight kills and one block in just two sets played. Finally, in a 3-0 win over USA South rival Peace, Jensen totaled five kills, two digs and two blocks. Also Nominated: Dana Sandknop, Greensboro; Kayla Trippeer, Ferrum; Stephanie Wood, Methodist; Sarah Sparks, Averett; Mackenzie Tingle, N.C. Wesleyan.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport - The junior libero from Clifton, Virginia averaged 4.8 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Hogge totaled 14 digs and one assist. In a 3-0 win over Washington & Lee, Hogge contributed 13 digs and one assist. In a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Meredith, Hogge tallied 15 digs. Finally, in a 3-0 win over USA South rival Peace, Hogge totaled 16 digs. Also Nominated: Rachel Evans, Methodist; Paige Aaron, Averett; Shana Ayers, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Melvin Burston, Maryville - The freshman quarterback from Bradenton, Florida accumulated 209 yards of total offense and three touchdowns in a 45-22 win over USA South foe Averett. Burston was 10-of-15 passing for 111 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Burston rushed 15 times for 98 yards and one touchdown. Also Nominated: Ke'Von White, Averett; Jacques Alston, N.C. Wesleyan; Rudy Rudolph, Christopher Newport.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Kendyhl Rodgers, Maryville - The freshman defensive back from Dundee, Florida tallied seven total tackles and a pass breakup in a 45-22 win over USA South foe Averett. Rogers tallied four solo tackles and three assisted take downs. Also Nominated: Keltcey Richardson, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Colby Johnson, Greensboro - The freshman midfielder from Fairfax, Virginia scored two goals in a 1-0-1 week for The Pride. In a 4-3, overtime, win over USA South foe Averett, Johnson scored the team's first and last goals of the match, the final tally coming in the fourth minute of overtime to give Greensboro the victory. In a scoreless tie versus Washington & Lee, Johnson managed four shots. Also Nominated: Alec Faulkner, Christopher Newport; Omar Kanten, N.C. Wesleyan; Frantz Joinvil, Averett.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Rebecca Staylor, N.C. Wesleyan - The Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman forward scored two goals and added two assists in a 1-1 week versus USA South competition for the Bishops. In a 6-0 win over Peace, Staylor netting two goals in 58 seconds while also assisting on the team's second and sixth scores of the match. In a 5-1 loss to Meredith, Staylor was held scoreless. Also Nominated: Allison Gibson, Greensboro; Mathilda Hansson, Averett; Megan Webb, Ferrum; Kelsey Snyder, Christopher Newport.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
         Jessie Kolden, Christopher Newport - The freshman right side hitter from Alexandria, Virginia averaged 2.2 kills and 2.2 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 4-0 record. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Kolden totaled 11 digs, six kills and two assists. In a 3-0 win over Washington & Lee, Kolden contributed eight digs, three kills, two blocks and one assist. In a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Meredith, Kolden tallied three kills in just one set played. Finally, in a 3-0 win over USA South rival Peace, Kolden totaled ten kills, three digs and one block. Also Nominated: Liz Widenhouse, Greensboro.
