USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 31, 2011

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Marcus Mayo, Ferrum - The senior quarterback from Lexington, Virginia accumulated 242 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in a 41-28 win over USA South foe Shenandoah. Mayo was 4-of-10 passing for 101 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Mayo rushed 25 times for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Also Nominated: Blake Williams, Maryville; Markeese Stovall, Christopher Newport; Vaughn Cross, Methodist.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
           Allen Stallings, Greensboro - The Manteo, North Carolina senior linebacker set a new program record for single-game tackles in a 27-22 loss to USA South foe Christopher Newport. Stallings accumulated 26 total tackles, 14 of which were solo take downs. He totaled two tackles for a loss of seven yards and forced two fumbles in the defeat. Also Nominated: Julian Keen, Maryville; Tazmon Foster, N.C Wesleyan; Stefan Varner, Averett; Byron Mitchell, Shenandoah; Melvin Trotter, Ferrum.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
           Andrew Noboa, Maryville - The Deltona, Florida senior kicker was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts in a 23-16 win over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan. Noboa connected on kicks from 36, 37 and 44 yards out. He also handled the kickoff duties and was 2-for-2 on extra point attempts.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
          Clayton Newton, Methodist - The sophomore midfielder from Virginia Beach, Virginia helped the Monarchs to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition by scoring one goal and adding three assists. In a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Newton had a hand in each Monarch goal as he assisted on the first and third scores while tallying a goal of his own in-between. In a 3-1 victory over Ferrum, Newton assisted on an insurance goal in the 70th minute. Also Nominated: John Thrower, Averett; Owen White, N.C. Wesleyan; Caleb Lewis, Christopher Newport.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Justin Wolfe, Christopher Newport - The senior goalkeeper from Williamsburg, Virginia earned a 2-0 record and two shutouts last week for the Captains. In 180 minutes in net, Wolfe did not allow a goal and collected 11 saves. In a 2-0 win over Mary Washington, Wolfe made six shots. In a 7-0 victory over USA South foe Greensboro, Wolfe stopped all five shots he faced. Also Nominated: Kyle Beach, Methodist; Dylan Yeargin, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Kendall Dishaw, Christopher Newport - The Salem, Virginia senior forward scored just two goals in a 2-1 week for the Captains, however those two goals gave the Captains the USA South Regular Season title. In a 3-0 loss to Lynchburg and a 4-0 win over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Dishaw was held scoreless but did manage a total of four shots. In what ultimately became the USA South regular season championship game, Dishaw tallied two goals in the first eight minutes of play as the Captains hung on to defeat Shenandoah, 2-1. Also Nominated: Nadja Sandau, Averett; Sarah Lang, Shenandoah; Kristin Habig, Methodist; Eliza Evans, Meredith.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Meghan Gumbs, Christopher Newport - The Mastic, New York goalkeeper tallied one shutout in a 2-1 week for the Captains. In 270 minutes in goal, Gumbs allowed four goals and made 13 saves. In a 3-0 loss to Lynchburg, Gumbs stopped six shots. In a 4-0 win over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Gumbs saved both shots she faced to tally the shutout. Finally, in a 2-1 win over USA South rival Shenandoah, Gumbs made five shots to help CNU earn the USA South regular season title. Also Nominated: Malin Borjesson, Averett.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Anna Hart, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior middle hitter from Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina compiled a .339 attack percentage and averaged 3.1 kills, 2.6 digs and 0.8 blocks per set as the Bishops posted a 3-1 record. In a 3-0 win over Salem, Hart totaled a double-double of 13 digs and ten kills. She also added three blocks and one assist. In a 3-2 victory over USA South rival Methodist, Hart tallied 17 kills, nine digs, five blocks and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe Ferrum, Hart contributed seven kills, four service aces, three digs and one block. Finally, in a 3-2 loss to USA South rival Averett, Hart notched a double-double with 16 digs and 15 kills. She also added three blocks and two assists in the defeat. Also Nominated: Brittany Moore, Averett; Chelsea McClure, Christopher Newport; Cori Spade, Meredith; Stephanie Wood, Methodist.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Paige Aaron, Averett - The junior libero from Danville, Virginia averaged 5.6 digs and 0.7 service aces per set last week as the Cougars posted a 2-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Greensboro, Aaron totaled 15 digs and two service aces. In a 3-0 loss to Christopher Newport, Aaron contributed 19 digs, two assists and two service aces. Finally, in a 3-2 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Aaron tallied 27 digs, four service aces and one assist. Also Nominated: Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport; MaryBeth Finegan, Meredith; Rachel Evans, Methodist.

Rookies of the Week

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Ke'Von White, Averett - The freshman running back from Midlothian, Virginia totaled the second-highest single game rushing total in school history in a 28-21, overtime, win over USA South rival Methodist. White ran the ball 32 times for 217 yards with two touchdowns. He also caught one pass for four yards. Also Nominated: Marcus Morrast, Christopher Newport; Melvin Burston, Maryville.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Kendyhl Rodgers, Maryville - The freshman defensive back from Dundee, Florida tallied three key pass breakups in the endzone to help the Scots top USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, 23-16. Rodgers also added three total tackles, one of which was for a loss of four yards. Also Nominated: Josh Oliver, Ferrum; Keltcey Richardson, Methodist; Ervin Brown, Averett.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Nathan Brown, Averett - The freshman midfielder from Sydney, Australia scored two goals in a 5-0 win over USA South rival Ferrum in the team's only action last week. Brown tallied the match's third and fourth goals in the 41st and 52nd minutes, respectfully. Also Nominated: Omar Kanten, N.C. Wesleyan; Eirik Nordseth, Methodist.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Rachel Didier, Meredith - The Cary, Illinois freshman midfielder scored two goals and added one assist in the team's only action of last week, a 9-1 win over USA South foe Peace. Didier scored in the 25th and 67th minutes while assisting on the eventual game-winning goal in the 12th minute. Also Nominated: Taylor Oehm, Shenandoah; Kelsey Thomas, Christopher Newport.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
         Jessie Kolden, Christopher Newport - The freshman right side hitter from Alexandria, Virginia averaged 2.8 kills and 1.5 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 3-0 record. In a 3-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Kolden totaled two kills, one dig and one block in just two sets played. In a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Averett, Kolden contributed 12 kills, five digs, one service ace and one block. Finally, in a 3-0 win over USA South rival Ferrum, Kolden totaled eight kills, six digs, one assist and one block. Also Nominated: Nicole Barringer, Averett.
