USA South Athletes of the Week - March 19, 2012

Baseball Player of the Week
Nick Beall, Shenandoah - The junior outfielder from Montclair, Virginia went 5-for-10 (.500) with a .722 on-base percentage, six runs scored, one double, seven walks and one stolen base as the Hornets posted a 4-0 record last week. In an 11-8 win over Penn St.-Altoona, Beall was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two walks and one stolen base. In an 8-3 victory over Bridgewater, Beall was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one double. Finally, in a two-game sweep of USA South foe Greensboro, Beall was a combined 1-for-3 with one run scored and five walks. Also Nominated: Austin Catherina, Greensboro; Chris McDougal, Christopher Newport; James Carter, Averett.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Cory Nelson, Shenandoah - The Portsmouth, Virginia senior pitcher/third baseman earned a victory in his only appearance on the mound as the Hornets defeated USA South rival Greensboro, 6-5. Nelson tossed eight innings, allowing four unearned runs on three hits and four walks with six strikeouts. Additionally, offensively, Nelson hit .235 with five RBI and two runs scored last week. Also Nominated: Michael Cobb, Greensboro; Chris Walker, Ferrum; Matt Verdillo, Christopher Newport; Tyler Long, Averett.

Softball Player of the Week
Sabrina Hill, Christopher Newport - The freshman first baseman from Stafford, Virginia went 9-for-16 (.562) with a 1.375 slugging percentage, nine RBI, five runs scored, four home runs, one double, two walks and one stolen base as the Captains posted a 4-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader split with N.C. Wesleyan, Hill was a combined 3-for-5 with three RBI, one run scored, one home run and two walks. In a doubleheader split with Averett, Hill was a combined 3-for-6 with two runs scored, one run batted in, one home run and one stolen base. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of Ferrum, Hill was a combined 3-for-5 with five RBI, two runs scored and two home runs. Also Nominated: Leah Gibson, Averett; Britany Evans, Greensboro; Brittany Guepe, Shenandoah; Karly Thompson, Ferrum; Sarah Troxler, Peace; Alex Warren, Meredith; Jordan Adams, Methodist.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Whitney Haller, Christopher Newport - The Midlothian, Virginia junior earned three complete-game victories in three appearances last week for the Captains versus USA South competition. Haller totaled 19 innings pitched and allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on 14 hits with four walks and 20 strikeouts. In a 5-1 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Haller allowed one earned run on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts. In a 10-0, five-inning, win over Averett, Haller tossed the shutout and allowed just one hit and two walks with eight strikeouts. Finally, in a 5-2 victory over Ferrum, Haller allowed two unearned runs on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Also Nominated: Hannah McLeod, Peace; Amanda Beirne, Meredith; Rachel Shumaker, Ferrum; Jessica Farmer, Methodist.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Ashton Marshall, Christopher Newport - The Round Hill, Virginia sophomore midfielder tallied 12 points on ten goals and two assists in a 26-11 victory over USA South foe Ferrum in her only action last week. Marshall scored on all but three of her shots and also added a draw control in the win. Also Nominated: Brooke Hewartson, Ferrum; Jasmine Stephens, Methodist; Samantha Sisson, Shenandoah; Brittany Ziobro, Greensboro.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Ashley Cross, Shenandoah - The Agawam, Massachusetts sophomore goalkeeper helped the Hornets to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition by allowing five goals and stopping six shots. In an 23-3 win over Agnes Scott, Cross stopped three shots while also saving three shots in a 17-2 win over N.C. Wesleyan. Also Nominated: Chelsea Totaro, LaGrange; Rachel Tomlinson, Christopher Newport.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Eric Shulman, Christopher Newport - The senior from Glen Allen, Virginia earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Captains. Shulman earned straight-set singles wins over opponents from Washington College and USA South foe Greensboro. He teamed with Matt King to earn the doubles wins. Also Nominated: Chris Miller, Ferrum; David Lembke, Averett.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Katherine Meindl, Methodist - The junior from Butler, Pennsylvania earned a 2-0 record at the number-one singles position and a 1-0 mark at the top doubles spot last week for the Monarchs. She earned straight-set singles wins over opponents from USA South foes Averett and Mary Baldwin. Meindl teamed with Laura Baker to collect the doubles win. Also Nominated: Kristen Edwards, Peace; Meredith Kelly, Greensboro.

Corbin Lucas, Shenandoah - The freshman outfielder from Grottoes, Virginia went 6-for-15 (.400) with six RBI, three runs scored, one double, one home run and one walk as the Hornets posted a 4-0 record last week. In an 11-8 win over Penn St.-Altoona, Lucas was 1-for-4. In an 8-3 victory over Bridgewater, Lucas was 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run scored and one double. Finally, in a two-game sweep of USA South foe Greensboro, Lucas was a combined 3-for-7 with three RBI, two runs scored, one home run and one walk. Also Nominated: James Feldmann, Greensboro; Timothy Coston, Averett; Preston Grissom, Christopher Newport.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Matt Riegler, Shenandoah - The Sicklerville, New Jersey freshman earned a win and two saves last week for the Hornets. Riegler totaled 4.1 innings, all in relief, and allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts. In an 11-8 win over Penn St.-Altoona, Riegler collected a save by pitching a perfect inning with one strikeout. In an 8-3 victory over Bridgewater, Riegler collected a no-decision after pitching 1.1 scoreless innings and allowing one hit. Finally, in a two-game sweep of USA South foe Greensboro, Riegler earned a win in game-one and a save in game-two as he pitched two total innings and allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Elliott McKinney, Averett.

Kayla Malone, Methodist - The Willard, North Carolina freshman earned a 2-0 record last week in two appearances for the Monarchs last week versus USA South competition. Malone totaled 12 innings pitched and allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. In a 10-1, five-inning, win over Mary Baldwin, Malone pitched four shutout innings and allowed one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. In a 5-4, eight-inning, victory over Shenandoah, Malone went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Leah Powell, Averett.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Liz Bereit, Shenandoah - The Latrobe, Pennsylvania freshman defender tallied nine points on seven goals and two assists last week as the Hornets posted a 2-0 record versus USA South competition. Bereit also accumulated eight draw controls, four groundballs and one caused turnover last week. In a 23-3 win over Agnes Scott, Bereit scored six goals and added one assist with five draw controls. In a 17-2 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Bereit totaled two goals, four groundballs, three draw controls and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Caila Cummings, Ferrum; Cassandra Walter, Methodist; Nadya Fedun, Greensboro; Katie Vu, Christopher Newport.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Peter Hviid, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Gentofte, Denmark earned a 2-0 record both in singles and doubles action last week for the Bishops. Hviid earned singles wins at the number six and three positions over opponents from Washington College and Shenandoah, respectfully. In doubles action, Hviid earned the wins at the number-two position. Also Nominated: Will Sloan, Christopher Newport; Dillon Sullivan, Methodist. 

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Kristen Edwards, Peace - The freshman from Clayton, North Carolina earned a singles and doubles win in her only action last week versus USA South rival Averett. Edwards' singles win was at the number-two position while her doubles victory was at the top-spot. Also Nominated: Emily Talley, Methodist; Angie Menendez, Christopher Newport.
