USA South Athletes of the Week - March 26, 2012

Baseball Player of the Week
Shannon Mark, Christopher Newport - The senior outfielder from Burke, Virginia went 8-for-13 (.615) with five RBI, four runs scored, two triples and two walks as the Captains posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 9-4 win over Tufts, Mark was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one run batted in and one triple. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Mark was a combined 5-for-8 with four RBI, two runs scored, one triple and two walks. Also Nominated: Bill Wooding, Greensboro; Jimbo Newcomb, Averett; Paul Jaglowski, Ferrum.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jacob Cadle, Greensboro - The Denton, North Carolina junior pitcher earned a victory in his only appearance on the mound as The Pride defeated Frostburg State, 3-0. Cadle tossed seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Ryan Fleischmann, Christopher Newport; Cody Beaver, Averett; Rusty White, Methodist; Cory Nelson, Shenandoah.

Softball Player of the Week
Jordan Adams, Methodist - The junior shortstop from Wilmington, North Carolina went 5-for-9 (.556) with three RBI, two runs scored, four stolen bases and two walks as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Adams was a combined 3-for-6 with three RBI, one run scored, two stolen bases and one walk. In a 7-5 victory over Salem, Adams was 2-for-3 with one run scored, two stolen bases and one walk. Also Nominated: Alex Warren, Meredith; Carly Creef, N.C. Wesleyan; Brittany Guepe, Shenandoah; Leah Gibson, Averett.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Jessica Farmer, Methodist - The Hope Mills, North Carolina junior earned two complete-game victories in two appearances last week for the Monarchs. Farmer totaled 14 innings pitched and allowed one run on eight hits with one walk and ten strikeouts. In a 5-0 victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Farmer tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits with four strikeouts. In a 7-5 win, Farmer allowed five runs, only one of which was earned, on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
Ashton Marshall, Christopher Newport - The Round Hill, Virginia sophomore midfielder tallied 26 points on 18 goals and eight assists to go along with three draw controls, two caused turnovers and one groundball as the Captains posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 19-13 win over Lynchburg, Marshall totaled seven points on four goals and three assists. In a 22-3 win over USA South foe Methodist, Marshall notched ten points on seven goals and three assists with two caused turnovers, one draw control and one groundball. Finally, in a 20-8 victory over Guilford, Marshall contributed nine points on seven goals and two assists with two draw controls. Also Nominated: Brooke Hewartson, Ferrum; Kelsey Griffin, LaGrange; Samantha Sisson, Shenandoah.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Becca Geist, Christopher Newport - The Fairfax, Virginia junior midfielder helped the Captains to a 3-0 record last week by leading the team in caused turnovers with eight. She also added five goals, four assists, four groundballs and two draw controls last week. In a 19-13 win over Lynchburg, Geist totaled four goals, two assists, four caused turnovers, two groundballs and two draw controls. In a 22-3 win over USA South foe Methodist, Geist notched one goal, one assist and one groundball. Finally, in a 20-8 victory over Guilford, Geist contributed one assist, four caused turnovers and one groundball. Also Nominated: Chelsea Totaro, LaGrange; Ashley Cross, Shenandoah.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Duncan Miller, Methodist - The sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama earned a 2-0 record at both the number-one singles and doubles positions last week for the Monarchs. Miller earned straight-set singles wins over opponents from Connecticut College and USA South foe Greensboro. He teamed with Hans Baumstark to earn the doubles wins. Also Nominated: Andrey Yasyr, Averett.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Marion Gloor, Christopher Newport - The junior from Niederlenz, Switzerland earned a 4-0 record at the number-three singles position and a 3-1 mark at the top doubles spot last week for the Captains. She earned straight-set singles wins over opponents from Goucher, Mary Baldwin, Peace and Meredith. Gloor teamed with Sarah Stafford to collect the doubles wins over opponents from Goucher, Mary Baldwin and Peace. Also Nominated: Betty Edwards, Meredith; Laura Baker, Methodist.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Corbin Lucas, Shenandoah - The freshman outfielder from Grottoes, Virginia went 7-for-17 (.412) with three run scored, two RBI, one double and one walk as the Hornets posted a 3-2 record last week. In a 4-1 win over Randolph-Macon Lucas was 1-for-3. In a doubleheader split with Lynchburg, Lucas went a combined 3-for-6 with one run batted in. In a doubleheader split with USA South foe Methodist, Lucan went a combined 3-for-8 with three runs scored, one run batted in, one double and one walk. Also Nominated: J.T. Crowder, Averett.

Softball Rookie of the Week
Ally Griffin, Methodist - The freshman catcher from Wilmington, North Carolina went 5-for-10 (.500) as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Griffin was a combined 4-for-7. In a 7-5 victory over Salem, Griffin was 1-for-3. Also Nominated: Kylene Culler, Ferrum; Morgan Jones, Averett; Amanda White, Meredith.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Leah Powell, Averett - The Midlothian, Virginia freshman earned a 2-0 record last week in three appearances for the Cougars last week versus USA South competition. Powell totaled 14.1 innings pitched and allowed four runs on ten hits with one walk and 15 strikeouts. In a 9-0, five-inning, win over Mary Baldwin, Powell tossed a no-hitter, allowing just one walk with seven strikeouts to earn the victory. In a 7-0 victory over Shenandoah, Powell threw a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits with six strikeouts to collect the win. Finally, in an 8-7 loss to Shenandoah, Powell pitched 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kayla Malone, Methodist.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Liz Bereit, Shenandoah - The Latrobe, Pennsylvania freshman midfielder tallied ten points on seven goals and three assists last week as the Hornets posted a 2-0 record. Bereit also accumulated eight draw controls, four groundballs and one caused turnover last week. In a 19-2 win over Hood, Bereit scored four goals and added one assist with two draw controls. In a 16-9 victory over Greensboro, Bereit totaled three goals and two assists with eight groundballs, two draw controls and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Ashley Davis, LaGrange; Katie Vu, Christopher Newport; Caila Cummings, Ferrum.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Jyri Hayrinen, Averett - The freshman from Mikkeli, Finland earned a 2-0 singles record and a 1-1 doubles mark last week for the Cougars. Hayrinen earned singles wins at the number two and three positions over opponents from USA South foe Greensboro and Guilford, respectfully. In doubles action, Hayrinen teamed with David Lembke and earned the with at the number-one position versus Greensboro. Also Nominated: Dillon Sullivan, Methodist.
