USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 29, 2012

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Tim Reynolds, Ferrum - The sophomore quarterback from Arlington, Virginia accumulated 221 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in a 35-12 victory over USA South foe Greensboro. Reynolds was 15-of-21 (71.4%) through the air for 113 yards with two touchdown passes. On the ground, he gained 108 yards rushing on 16 carries with two touchdowns. Also Nominated: Antwan Thorpe, Greensboro; Ed Russ, LaGrange; Marcus Morrast, Chris. Newport.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Bryan Bing, Methodist - The Bradenton, Florida sophomore linebacker recorded 17 total tackles in a 26-23, overtime, win at USA South foe LaGrange. Bing compiled nine solo tackles and eight assisted take downs including 3.5 tackles for a loss of 16 total yards. Also Nominated: Andre Carter, LaGrange; Dylan Wolfenbarger, Maryville; James Wallace, N.C. Wesleyan; Julian Cinotti, Greensboro; Justin Navarro, Christopher Newport; Tarrell Owens, Ferrum.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Cody Ausherman, Methodist - The Kissimmee, Florida sophomore place kicker connected on a 23-yard field goal in overtime as the Monarchs topped USA South foe LaGrange, 26,23. For the game, Ausherman was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts with his longest of 45 yards coming as time expired in the fourth quarter to force overtime. He was also 2-for-2 on point after touchdown attempts in the victory. Also Nominated: Jonathan Sykes, Maryville; Wesley Franklin, Ferrum.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Jalon Brown, Christopher Newport - The sophomore midfielder from Yorktown, Virginia scored two goals and added an assist in a 4-1 win over regionally-ranked Mary Washington in the Captains lone game last week. Brown tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 61st minute, assisted on the next goal in the 66th minute and finished of the scoring with an insurance score in the 82nd minute. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Nate Barker, Averett - The senior goalkeeper from Cave Creek, Arizona collected the victory in a 3-2 win over USA South foe Greensboro last week. In 90 minutes of action, Baker made two saves. Also Nominated: Logan Paussa, Greensboro. 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Mathilda Hansson, Averett - The Uddevalla, Sweden sophomore midfielder tallied two goals in a 4-0 win over USA South foe Greensboro to help Averett secure a perfect 11-0 regular season league record. Hansson scored the second and third tallies of the match in the 27th and 57th minutes, respectfully. Also Nominated: Emma O'Reilly, Christopher Newport; Jessie Davis, Meredith; Taylor Emerson, Maryville.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Malin Borjesson, Averett - The Stenungsund, Sweden junior goalkeeper collected a shutout in a 4-0 victory over USA South foe Greensboro to help Averett secure a perfect 11-0 regular season league record. Borjesson played 90 minutes in the contest and needed to make just one save for the win. Also Nominated: Joy Piirto, Christopher Newport; Kelsey Hopper, Meredith.

Volleyball Player of the Week
Lauren Naugle, William Peace - The junior outside hitter from Raleigh, North Carolina averaged 4.9 kills, a .307 hitting percentage and 2.4 digs per set last week as the Pacers posted a 3-0 record. In a 3-1 win over USA South rival Meredith, Naugle posted a double-double of 24 kills and ten digs. She also added two service aces in the victory. In a 3-0 win over Shenandoah, Naugle totaled 13 kills, eight digs, two blocks, one assist and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Guilford, Naugle contributed 12 kills, six digs, one block and one service ace. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Abby Hogge, Christopher Newport - The senior defensive specialist from Clifton, Virginia averaged 4.11 digs per set last week as the Captains posted a 5-0 record, including a 4-0 mark at the CNU Invitational where Hogge was named MVP. In a 3-0 win over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, Hogge totaled five digs and one assist to extend the Captains regular season USA South match win streak to 109. In a 3-0 victory over Moravian, Hogge tallied 11 digs. In a 3-1 win over 17th-ranked Salisbury, Hogge contributed 25 digs and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Lynchburg, Hogge totaled eight digs. Finally, in a 3-2 win over 16th-ranked Cortland State, Hogge tallied 25 digs and one service ace. Also Nominated: Shana Ayers, N.C. Rookies of the Week

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Paul Dukes, Christopher Newport - The freshman running back from Norfolk, Virginia rushed for 113 yards on 29 carries with one touchdown in a 17-10 win over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan. Dukes scored what proved to be the deciding tally, a nine-yard run, with just over one minute to play in the fourth quarter. Also Nominated: Evan Pittenger, Maryville; John Young, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Jonathan Clark, Maryville - The freshman defensive lineman from Villa Rica, Georgia totaled five tackles, two of which were for a loss of 21 yards, in a 31-7 victory over USA South foe Averett. Clark compiled one solo tackle, four assisted take downs, one sack and a pass break-up in the win. Also Nominated: Alteriq Flowers, N.C. Wesleyan; Justin McIntyre, LaGrange; Nick Adams, Ferrum. 

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Tyler McLemore, Greensboro - The freshman defender from Saint Augustine, Florida tallied an unassisted goal in the 83rd minute in a 3-2 loss to USA South rival Averett last week. McLemore's goal pulled The Pride within one goal but it would eventually not be enough. Also Nominated: None.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Taylor Brown, Meredith - The Cary, North Carolina freshman forward tallied two goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-1 victory over USA South rival William Peace. Brown back-to-back goals in the 38th and 41st minutes. Also Nominated: Frida Olofsson, Averett; Shaydah Naraghi, Christopher Newport; Sierra Siegel, Maryville.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Maddie Irvin, William Peace - The freshman defensive specialist from Raleigh, North Carolina averaged 4.2 digs per set last week as the Pacers posted a 3-0 record. In a 3-1 win over USA South rival Meredith, Irvin posted nine digs, three assists, two kills and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over Shenandoah, Irvin totaled 13 digs, one assist and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Guilford, Irvin contributed 20 digs, three assists and one service ace. Also Nominated: Lindsey Boles, Averett; Cartland Phillips, Greensboro; Emily Hendricks, Meredith.
