USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 6, 2014

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Dustin Baxter, LaGrange - The senior guard from Cookeville, Tennessee averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals per contest as the Panthers compiled a 3-1 record since 12/23/13. In a 102-90 loss at Stevenson, Baxter posted four points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. In a 96-88 win over Rust, Baxter contributed 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. In an 81-74 victory at USA South foe Methodist, Baxter tallied 17 points, seven rebounds and one steal. Finally, in an 86-76 win at USA South rival Greensboro, Baxter totaled 23 points and nine rebounds. Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Kylene Culler, Ferrum - The junior forward from Stuart, Virginia averaged a double-double of 12.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest as the Panthers compiled a 4-0 record since 12/23/13. In an 87-74 win at Birmingham Southern, Culler totaled 16 points, five rebounds and two assists. In a 79-77, overtime, victory at 17th-ranked Rhodes, Culler notched a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds to go along with two assists. In a 78-44 win at USA South foe Covenant, Culler contributed two points, nine rebounds and one steal. Finally, in a 75-50 victory at USA South foe Maryville, Culler tallied a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds to go along with one assist and one steal. Also Nominated: Jessica Myers, Averett; Jackie Lyles, Methodist; Syerra Troutman, Greensboro; Jessie Blankenship, Covenant; Chandler Alverson, Piedmont.

Rookies of the Week

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Devan Gregory, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 13.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals per contest in a 1-2 week for The Pride. In a 91-75 win over Oneonta State, Gregory totaled 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal. In an 89-88 loss to USA South foe Huntingdon, Gregory contributed ten points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Finally, in an 86-76 loss to USA South rival LaGrange, Gregory tallied ten points, five rebounds and one assist. Also Nominated: Charles Bryant, Averett; Ben Phelps, Covenant; Jalen Vince, William Peace.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Joslyn Spires, Greensboro - The Thomasville, North Carolina freshman guard averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per contest as The Pride posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In an 79-66 win over Huntingdon, Spires totaled 17 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals. In a 66-51 victory over LaGrange, Spires contributed 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Also Nominated: Alexis Sollars, Averett; Mindy Brackins, Maryville; Maya Banks, Methodist; Kenyata Harris, N.C. Wesleyan; Brianna Barrett, Piedmont.
