                                                                         CNU Presented With Presidents' Cup

September 15, 2004 - The Presidents' Cup symbolizes the league's top overall athletic program each.  Christopher Newport won this prestigious award for 2003-2004 and was honored for that Saturday.  This was the seventh consecutive year CNU has captured the coveted title.

The Cup is presented to the institution that accumulates the highest total number of points each year, beginning with the fall sports and ending with the completion of the spring sports season.  All sports have a point value based on the number of teams participating.  Points are then awarded in a descending manner with the top finisher receiving the most points.  Since the inception of the Cup in 1978, only three schools have won it.  Former Conference member St. Andrews won the first five years, form 1978-1982.  CNU and Methodist have garnered the remaining Cups, winning 13 and eight times, respectively.

Commissioner Rita Wiggs presented the Captains with their trophy at halftime of Saturday's football game.  President Paul S. Trible, Jr. and Athletic Director C.J. Woollum proudly accepted.
