(STAUNTON, VA) - The USA South Athletic Conference presented its Sportsmanship Trophy to Mary Baldwin College at its volleyball match versus Ferrum College on Tuesday, September 28. USA South Commissioner Rita Wiggs was on hand to present the trophy to Mary Baldwin Director of Athletics Sharon Spalding along with three student-athletes.
Mary Baldwin won the Sportsmanship Trophy for the second consecutive season after they picked up Sportsmanship Awards in three sports during the 2009-2010 academic year. The Fighting Squirrels were chosen as Sportsmanship Award winners in women's soccer, volleyball and softball.
There is a Sportsmanship Award for 11 of the 14 Conference-sponsored sports. For each sport, all team members vote for the team they deem to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team garnering the most votes receives that sport's Sportsmanship Award. The school that wins the most individual sport awards wins the overall USA South Sportsmanship Award. The award came about through the USA South Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of our campuses.
