Ferrum to Restart Wrestling Program
Ferrum, Va. – Ferrum College is bringing back the sport of
wrestling after a nearly 25 year absence, making Ferrum one of only
two NCAA Division III institutions in Virginia to offer varsity
wrestling. A press conference to introduce the new head wrestling
coach will be held on July 6. Members of the media interested in
attending should contact Gary
Holden, Sports Information Director, at (540) 365-4306 or
gholden@ferrum.edu.
“We're thrilled to be restarting this program,” said
college President Jennifer Braaten. “Wrestling adds another
dimension to our athletic program, and reinforces our commitment to
providing students with a wide variety of co-curricular
options.”
Located in southwest Virginia, Ferrum College competes in the USA
South Athletic Conference and offers 16 varsity athletic programs
(eight men's and eight women's) including men's baseball, men's and
women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's
football, men's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's
soccer, women's softball, women's swimming, men's and women's
tennis, and women's volleyball.
“We have a very strong base of high school wrestling programs
in Virginia and the surrounding states,” said Abe
Naff, Ferrum's Director of Athletics. “Ferrum will
now be able to offer young men the opportunity to pursue this great
sport while working toward their college degree.”
