Averett Athletics Unveils New Logo

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University is proud to announce that it has refined its athletics logo and logotype, which was unveiled at its annual athletics awards banquet on Tuesday night.

The updated Averett Cougars identity reflects a modernized version of the previous logo, as well as a new logotype to visually connect the two together. The evolution of the Cougar logo was designed to provide a more aggressive, contemporary look to the logo while making it more three-dimensional.

“I'm excited about the work our committee has done on this mark,” Averett Director of Athletics Sam Ferguson said. “Before today, we had a logo. Our committee helped us create a brand for Averett Athletics that includes a consistent look throughout our entire department, as well as guidelines for using the mark. We are also pleased with the movement encompassed in our new fierce logo, as well as its strong connection with the word mark.”

The new logo and logotype replaces the previous design that was created in 1998.

“The new Averett Cougar conveys action and energy,” said Randy King, Averett's director of marketing and communications. “I believe that the community will find it exciting and engaging. I can see more bumper stickers and T-shirts with our new logo being worn all around the region — by people who like the new look and want to show their support of Averett.

“For Averett, the new Athletics visual identity will help grow brand recognition for our school and our athletics programs.”

The new Averett Cougars logo and logotype was designed by Jamie Legg of J.L. Designs of Holly Springs, N.C.

“Working with the Averett University athletic department to produce these marks was an exciting project,” Legg said. “The cougar head logo evolved from a flat, one-dimensional profile to a three-fourths facial view with depth and dimension. The logo has a sense of motion and clearly meets the directive to be fierce and aggressive.

“Once the cougar head icon was developed, special attention was given to choosing the proper font to compliment the logo. The chosen font was highly modified, with special attention given to the letter A, which anchors the lettermark and wordmark. This font has a heavy, athletic feel which is both modern and traditional at the same time. I am really pleased with our results and think that this system will help Averett establish strengthen its athletic brand.”

Following its unveiling at the Averett athletics awards banquet, those who attended received a T-shirt featuring the new logo, which will replace the previous Cougars logo immediately. Averett will phase in the new logo and all new athletics equipment, apparel and products purchased will feature the new branding.

“Our new brand has been well received by the focus groups we have presented to, which include alumni, students and staff,” Ferguson said. “The new look also provides many options and has been mentioned as an added plus by our focus groups.”
