Football Awards Announced

November 18, 2004 – The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for football.  Conference co-champs Christopher Newport and Shenandoah lead the way with 20 and 18 players, respectively.  N.C. Wesleyan is also well represented, claiming two major awards.  CNU's Roland Hilliard is the Offensive Player of the Year, while Ferrum's Darren Venable is the Player of the Year on the defensive side.  NCWC's Javon Williams has been named the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while teammate Andrew Quigley is the Defensive Rookie of the Year.  SU head coach Paul Barnes is the 2004 Coach of the Year. 

Hilliard, a sophomore running back from Manassas, VA, became the first CNU running back to run for more than 1,000 yards on a season.  He rushed for 1,032 yards, second in the USA South.  He played an instrumental part in the Captains going 8-2 this season and sharing the Conference championship with Shenandoah.  The Captains earned one of three at-large bids for the NCAA playoffs. 

Venable, a Covington, VA senior defensive back, garnered his third consecutive Defensive Player of the Year award.  In 2004, he was third in the Conference in tackles, with 97.  This is his third straight year being named First Team All-Conference.  He was Second Team his freshman year. 

Williams, a freshman running back from Goldsboro, NC, had a dominant rookie year.  He ran for 924 yards in eight games for the Bishops.  He led the league in rushing (115.5 per game), all-purpose yards (158.4 per game) and scoring (8.2 points per game).  He led NCWC to a 4-4 record in its first-ever season of competition. 

Quigley, a freshman defensive back from Manteo, NC, was instrumental in the Bishops having a successful first season.  He recorded 99 tackles for the season, second in the USA South.  The Bishops finished 2004 4-4 overall, 3-3 in Conference action.
