Softball Awards Announced

April 15, 2004 – The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for softball.  Christopher Newport and Methodist dominated the teams, with eight and five members, respectively.  Captain Dallas Slosjarik has been named the Player of the Year.  Teammate Vanessa Gray has been named the Pitcher of the Year.  On the rookie side, Peace's Lauren Pleasant is the Rookie of the Year while Ferrum's Kim Cox is the Rookie Pitcher of the Year.  CNU coach Keith Parr is the 2004 Coach of the Year.   

Slosjarik, a senior from New Kent, VA, played a key role in the Captains capturing the regular season title.  She hit .417 with 40 RBI and 22 stolen bases this season.  The outfielder was first in the league in RBIs and triples, second in hits, third in stolen bases and runs scored and fifth in batting.  She also posted a .977 fielding percentage.  2004 marks the third straight year Slosjarik has been named First Team All-Conference.

A senior from Newport News, VA, Gray led the Captains to a 35-5 overall record, including 15-1 in the USA South.  Her performance was instrumental in the Captains winning the regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming tournament.  She posted a 16-1 record on the year.  She had a .81 ERA, tops in the Conference, with 65 strikeouts.  Gray was named Player of the Year last year and Rookie of the Year in 2001. 

Pleasant, a freshman from Raleigh, NC, helped the Pride finish fourth in the regular season.  They finished 19-14-1 overall, including going 8-7-1 in the USA South.  She split her time between pitching and playing shortstop.  On the mound, she posted a 2.02 ERA and an 11-8 record.  Her 124 strikeouts was second in the Conference.  From the plate, she hit .343 with 22 RBI.  She also recorded a .961 fielding percentage. 

A Gladys, VA freshman, Cox led the Panthers to a third place Conference finish with a 24-13 overall record and 10-6 in the Conference.  She posted a 12-6 record with a 1.88 ERA.  Her 73 strikeouts was fourth in the USA South. 

Parr is in this first season at the helm of the Captains.  He served the past four years as an assistant to then-head coach Paul Weiss.  He led his team to the regular season title and the top seed in the tournament.  The Captains were 35-5 overall, including 15-1 in the Conference.
