Women's Basketball Awards Announced
February 23, 2005 – The USA South Athletic Conference
has announced its All-Conference awards for women's basketball.
Greensboro, Ferrum and Shenandoah each have three representatives
amongst the First, Second and Honorable Mention Teams. FC's Tara
Toland is the Player of the Year, while Hanna Taylor of Averett is the
Rookie of the Year. GC's Jason Tuggle has been named the Coach of
the Year.
Toland, a senior from North, SC, played a key role in the Panthers
finishing the regular season second in the Conference. The Panthers were
11-3 in the USA South and 14-11 overall. She led the USA
South in scoring, steals and assists. Toland has averaged 18.7
points, 7.9 assists and 3.7 steals thus far this year. She also
leads the nation in assists. This is Toland's second First Team
All-Conference recognition. She was named to the Second Team in
2004.
A freshman from Fredericksburg, VA, Taylor was integral in the Cougars
finishing fifth in the regular season, compared to last year's ninth.
She averaged 16.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, ranking her fifth
and eighth in the Conference, respectively. Taylor also had the
highest field goal percentage in the USA South (52.5%). The
Cougars finished the regular season 6-8 in Conference action and 10-14
overall.
Tuggle, in his third year as the head of the Pride, led his team to its
first outright regular season Conference title this year. The team
finished 12-2 in the USA South and 18-6 overall - a vast improvement
over last year's 7-9, 13-14 sixth place finish. Tuggle was also
