USA South Football Awards Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic
Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for football. A
total of 86 student-athletes have earned USA South All-Conference
honors. N.C. Wesleyan's Cedric Townsend is the Offensive
Player of the Year, while Averett's Jermaine Moore is the Defensive Player of the
Year. N.C. Wesleyan's Teron Bush has been named
the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Greensboro's Brick Crowder is
the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Christopher Newport head coach Matt
Kelchner is the
2006 Coach of the Year.
Townsend, a junior quarterback from Kenansville, North Carolina led the USA South
in passing, completing 140-of-251 passes for 2,212 yards with 17
touchdown passes. He also gained 689 yards rushing on 113 carries
with nine rushing touchdowns. Townsend led the league in passing
yards per game, 221.2, and had a USA South-best 148.17 passing
efficiency rating. For his efforts this season, Townsend was named a
First-Team All-Conference selection at quarterback.
Moore, a LaCrosse, Virginia senior linebacker, led the
USA South with 72 total tackles in conference games and also compiled a
league-best 17.5 tackles for loss. On the season, Moore tallied two
sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception.
Moore helped lead the Cougars to a 6-1 USA South record and a share of
the program's first conference championship. This season marks the third
all-conference honor for Moore. He was named Second Team All-Conference
in 2003 and First Team All-Conference last season.
Bush, a freshman running back from Newport News, Virginia, had a dominant
rookie year as he was second in the Conference with 688 rushing
yards during USA South contests, an average of 98.3 yards per game. Bush
averaged a league-best 8.9 yards per carry. Through the air, Bush caught
19 passes for 167 yards, an average of 8.8 yards per catch. Bush totaled
eight touchdowns this season, six rushing and two receiving. This season he was a First-Team All-Conference selection at
running back.
Crowder, a freshman linebacker from Montgomery, Alabama, led The Pride
in tackles with 63 on the season. He also had 5.5 tackles for
loss, two sacks and one forced fumble in his first year. For his
efforts, Crowder earned Second Team All-Conference honors at linebacker.
Kelchner, led the Captains to an 8-2 overall record and a 6-1 mark in
the USA South which earned Christopher Newport a share of the their
fifth USA South
Championship in six years. This is Kelchner's third coach of the year
award. The Captains earned the Conference's automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division III Playoffs
by virtue of a 41-31 victory over Averett. This will be CNU's fifth NCAA
Tournament appearance since the program's inaugural 2001 season.
