USA South Softball Awards
Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic
Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for softball. A
total of 37 student-athletes have been named to the USA South
All-Conference teams for softball. Methodist College's Jennifer
Sorensen has been named the Pitcher
of the Year while teammate Lesley Hewitt has been named the Rookie
Pitcher of the Year. Greensboro College's Jessica Clack is the
Player of the Year while Christopher Newport University's Katie Moyers is the Rookie of the
Year. Methodist coach Ron Simpson has been tabbed the 2006 Coach of the Year.
Clack, a sophomore from Clayton, N.C., played a key role in The Pride
finishing second in the Conference and earning the No. 2 seed in the
upcoming conference tournament. She hit .496 with 18 RBI's this season. The
shortstop was first in the
league in runs scored, hits and batting average. She also posted a .862
fielding percentage as The Pride finished the regular season
with a conference mark of 11-3 and 26-11 overall.
A senior from Spotsylvania, Va, Sorensen led the Monarchs to a 34-6 overall
record, including 13-1 in the USA South. Her performance was
instrumental in Methodist winning the regular season title and the
top seed in the upcoming tournament. She posted a 15-3 record on
the year including 8-0 in conference action. She had a 1.86 ERA as
she led the conference in saves, with four on the year.
Moyers a freshman from Ruckersville, Va., helped the Captains earn the
No. 5 seed in the upcoming USA South Softball Tournament. The
second baseman batted .402 as she had 23 RBIs and seven doubles. She also
had a fielding percentage of .940 as he helped lead the Captains to a
23-15 overall record and a 6-8 mark in the USA South.
A freshman from Garner, N.C., Hewitt helped lead the Monarchs to a 34-6 overall
record, including 13-1 in the USA South. Her performance helped
Methodist win the regular season title and the
top seed in the upcoming tournament. She posted a 9-1 record on
the year including a 3-1 mark in conference action. She had a 2.31
ERA in her first year of intercollegiate action.
Simpson is in his eighth season at the helm of the Monarchs. He
led his team to a first place finish in the regular season and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The
Monarchs were 34-6 overall, including
13-1 in the Conference. This is the fourth time that Simpson has
been honored as the Conference's Coach of the Year.
