USA South Football Awards Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) -
The USA South Athletic
Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for football. A
total of 87 student-athletes have earned USA South All-Conference
honors. N.C. Wesleyan's Cedric Townsend is the Offensive
Player of the Year, while Methodist's Daryl Lawrence is the Defensive Player of the
Year. Ferrum's Mike Vann has been named
the Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Christopher Newport's Adrin Diggs is
the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Finally, N.C. Wesleyan's Jack Ginn is the
2007 Coach of the Year. Also, for the first time, the USA South
recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each
competing school. All honors are determined by votes from the football
coach at each institution.
Townsend, a senior quarterback from Kenansville, North Carolina collects
his second consecutive Player of the Year award. He was second in the USA South
in passing, completing 138-of-251 passes for 1,980 yards with a
league-best 20
touchdowns. He also gained 675 yards rushing on 142 carries
with 13 touchdowns. Townsend was second in the league in passing
yards per game, 198.0, and was third in the USA South with a 137.18 passing
efficiency rating. For his efforts this season, Townsend was named a
First Team All-Conference selection at quarterback for the second
consecutive year. Finally, Townsend was named USA South Offensive Player
of the Week twice this fall.
Lawrence, a Jacksonville,
North Carolina senior linebacker, led the
USA South with 67 solo tackles and was third in total tackles with 111. On the season,
Lawrence tallied a team-high three sacks with five pass breakups, two
forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. This season marks the third
all-conference honor for Lawrence. He was named First Team All-Conference
this season and the previous one to go along with Second Team honors in 2005.
Finally, Lawrence was named USA South Defensive Player of the Week once
this fall.
Vann, a freshman running back from Woodbridge, Virginia, led the
Conference with 620 rushing yards during USA South contests, an average of
103.3 yards per game. Vann also
averaged a league-best 10.3 yards per carry in league games. For the
season on the ground, Vann rushed for 747 yards, good for an 81.1 per
game average, with nine touchdowns. Through the air, Bush caught
14 passes for a team-best 280 yards and two touchdowns. This season, he
was a First Team All-Conference selection at running back and earned USA
South Offensive Rookie of the Week honors three times.
Diggs, a freshman linebacker from Smithfield, Virginia, led the Captains
with 6.5 tackles for loss. For the season, Diggs totaled 44 tackles,
three sacks, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery. His efforts this
fall earned him Second Team All-Conference honors at linebacker and was
USA South Defensive Rookie of the Week accolades twice.
Ginn led the Bishops to an 8-2 overall record and a 7-0 mark in
the USA South which earned N.C. Wesleyan their first USA South
Championship. N.C. Wesleyan earns the program's first trip to the NCAA
Tournament while Ginn picks up his first Coach of the Year honor. The
Bishops became the first team in USA South football history to go
undefeated in league play and own the championship outright.
