USA South Men's Tennis Awards
Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic
Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for men's tennis.
A total of 18 student-athletes have been named to the USA South
All-Conference teams for men's tennis. Greensboro College's David
Sutton has been named the Player of the Year, Averett University's Erick
Ocampo is the Rookie of the Year while his coach, Bobby Shields, is named the 2007
Coach of the Year.
Sutton, a junior from Greensboro, North Carolina, playing at the
number-one singles position was undefeated this season, posting an 11-0
overall record and a 6-0 mark in league play. In number-one doubles,
Sutton, along with various teammates, posted a 6-5 overall record and a
3-3 record during USA South play. For his efforts this season, Sutton
earns First Team All-Conference honors.
A freshman from San Cristobal, Mexico, Ocampo helped the Cougars to
a share of the USA South Regular Season Title. Playing primarily at the
number-three singles position, Ocampo compiled a 10-3 overall record and
a perfect 6-0 mark in league play. In doubles action, Ocampo teamed with
Marcelo Diaz 12 times and once with Daniel McGregor to earn a 10-3
overall record and a 6-0 conference mark at the number-two position. For
his efforts this season, Ocampo earns Second Team All-Conference honors.
Shields, in his third year at the helm of the Cougars, receives his
first USA South Men's Tennis Coach of the Year honor. He had previously
been named the Conference's Women's Coach of the Year in 1999. Shields
helped guide Averett to a 9-6 overall record and a 5-1 mark in
conference play which was good enough to share the USA South Regular
Season Championship. The regular season title is the tenth in the
program's history and first since the 2004 season.
