USA South Cross Country
All-Conference Awards
Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has
announced its All-Conference awards for men's and women's cross country. A total of
40 student-athletes have been named to the USA South
All-Conference teams. Christopher Newport University swept all the
individual categories as Amy
Wampler and Edith Nault were named Runner and Rookie of the Year,
respectively, on the women's side while David Woodson and Jack Tierney were named Runner and Rookie of the Year,
respectively, on the men's side. For the fifth consecutive year,
Christopher Newport coach Keith Maurer was selected as both the men's and women's Coach of the
Year. Also, for the first time, the USA South recognized an
All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing
school.
Wampler, a sophomore from Spotsylvania, Virginia, was Christopher Newport's top runner this year. She had a season-best time of 23:34 at the
Salisbury Invitational where she placed third overall. Wampler competed
in five events this season, finishing as the first CNU runner each time.
She received four USA South Runner of the Week honors and collected her
second career all-conference honor. Last season, Wampler was named
First Team All-USA South and USA South Rookie of the Year.
A freshman from Poquoson, Virginia, Nault played a key role in the Captains'
successful 2007 season. She ran a season-best time of 24:35 in her first
collegiate race at the Salisbury Invitational, placing ninth out of 64
runners.
She was selected First-Team All-USA South and earned rookie of the week
honors three times this season.
Woodson, a junior from Gloucester, Virginia, was the Captains top male
runner this season. His season-best this year was a time of 25:58
at the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational where he placed 47th out of 100
runners, many of which consisted of Division-I athletes. Woodson, who
was named USA South Runner of the week twice this season, collects his
third career All-Conference honor.
An O'Fallon, Illinois freshman,
Tierney has been an integral part of the
Captains
squad. He ran a season-best time of 27:03 to finish
77th out of 100 runners, many of which consisted of Division-I athletes, at
U.S. Naval Academy Invitational. He
collected First-Team All-Conference honors and was named USA South
Rookie of the Week once this season.
