April 20, 2008 Christopher Newport Takes USA South Baseball Tournament Championship (BURLINGTON, N.C.) - Top-seeded Christopher Newport came out of the loser's bracket to win two games over second-seeded N.C. Wesleyan and capture the 2008 USA South Baseball Tournament championship. In the first game of the day, N.C. Wesleyan took a one-run lead into the ninth but saw Christopher Newport tie the game to force extra innings. The Captains went on to earn a 4-3 victory in 11 innings. Following a three-hour rain delay prior to the start of the second game, Christopher Newport would not need any late heroics as it cruised to a 12-3 victory, earning the program's third-ever tournament title and first since the 2002 season. The Captains were led by pitcher Kenny Moreland who picked up Christopher Newport's first and final wins of the tournament on the mound. For his efforts, Moreland was named the tournaments MVP.
