USA South Football Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for football. A total of 90 student-athletes have earned USA South All-Conference honors. Christopher Newport's Tunde Ogun is the Offensive Player of the Year, while Maryville's Kyle Chewning is the Defensive Player of the Year. N.C. Wesleyan's Stedman Mathis has been named the Offensive Rookie of the Year while Averett's Mario Huffman is the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Finally, Christopher Newport's Matt Kelchner is the 2008 Coach of the Year. Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. All honors are determined by votes from the football coach at each institution.

Ogun, a junior running back from Richmond, Virginia led the Captains and the USA South in rushing, averaging 181.6 yards per game. For the year, Ogun carried the ball 238 times for 1,634 yards, a 6.9 yard-per-carry average, with 13 touchdowns. Each one of those statistics were league-highs. He rushed for over 100 yards seven times and eclipsed the 200-yard mark in four consecutive games. His 283-yard effort in a win over N.C. Wesleyan set a new single-game school and USA South record. Additionally, his 1,634 rushing yards this fall sets a new USA South single-season record. For his efforts this season, Ogun was named a First Team All-Conference selection at running back. Also, he was named USA South Offensive Player of the Week four times this fall.

This season marks the second all-conference honor for Chewning as he was named First Team All-Conference at linebacker last fall as well. Finally, Chewning was named USA South Defensive Player of the Week once this season.

Mathis, a freshman running back from Warsaw, North Carolina, led the Bishops with 734 rushing yards during season. His 11 rushing scores ranked second in the league while his 91.8 yards per game was good for fourth in the USA South. Through the air, Mathis caught four passes for 21 yards, an average of 5.2 yards per catch. This season, he was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection at running back and earned USA South Offensive Rookie of the Week honors three times.
