Christopher Newport Picked to Win 2008 USA South Football Title

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - Christopher Newport University, under the direction of eighth-year Head Coach Matt Kelchner, was picked in the preseason coaches' poll to win the USA South Athletic Conference football title in 2008. The preseason poll was released at the annual USA South Football Media Day. The Captains have claimed a share of five USA South titles but have never won an outright crown. CNU finished 2007 with a 7-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in USA South play.

Christopher Newport received five of eight first place votes (47 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.

Ferrum College, a three-time USA South co-champion, finished second in the balloting with 40 points and two first place votes. Maryville College placed third in the poll with 39 points while N.C. Wesleyan College, which claimed the USA South title last season, was fourth with 30 points and the final remaining first place vote. The bottom half of the preseason poll featured Methodist University with 28 points, Shenandoah University with 20 points, Greensboro College with 11 points and Averett University with nine points.

The 2008 USA South football schedule kicks-off on Saturday, September 6 as all eight teams begin their seasons with non-conference action.
