USA South Lacrosse Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for lacrosse. A total of 25 student-athletes have been named to the teams. Christopher Newport University swept the individual honors as Katie Doherty has been named the Player of the Year, Meghan Harkey is the Rookie of the Year and their coach, Carolyn Raveia, is the Coach of the Year. Also, for the first time, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school. All honors are determined by votes from the women's lacrosse coach at each institution.

A junior midfielder from Fairfax, Virginia, Doherty led the USA South with 31 assists and was second in points with 52. She contributed 21 goals with a team-high 15 caused turnovers, 23 ground balls and 20 draw controls. This is the second consecutive season in which Doherty has earned first team honors. She also received second team honors as a freshman in 2006. Finally, Doherty earned USA South Player of the Week honors three times this spring.

A freshman from Purcellville, Virginia, Harkey led all USA South rookies in scoring with 49 points on 33 goals and 16 assists to go along with a league-best two game-winning goals. Harkey also contributed 18 ground balls, ten caused turnovers and nine draw controls during the season. For her efforts, Harkey was named first team all-conference as an attacker. Finally, Harkey received USA South Rookie of the Week honors twice this spring.

Raveia, in her first year at the helm of the Captains, led the team to a 10-5 overall record and an undefeated, 4-0, mark in league play. CNU's USA South Regular Season crown was the fifth such title in the program's history. The Captains are currently in the midst of a ten-game winning streak in league play. Finally, the ten overall wins this spring are currently the third-most in school history.
