Averett & Greensboro Set For USA South Men's Basketball Tournament Final

(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) - The 2008 USA South Men's Basketball Tournament semifinals concluded tonight, Friday, February 29, as the Averett and Greensboro advanced to the finals.

Fifth-seeded Averett continued the trend of lower-seeded upsets by defeating top-seeded Methodist, 70-68, in overtime. The Cougars used a double-double from Jonathan Rumley to take down the Monarchs in the extra period. Rumley finished with game-highs in points, rebounds and assists with 20, ten and five, respectfully.

In the second men's game of the day, six-seeded Greensboro became the first higher-seeded team to win a tournament game as they defeated seventh-seeded N.C. Wesleyan, 83-81. The Pride used balanced scoring to rally in the second half after being down by seven at halftime. Greensboro's Jason Sharp helped lead the way with a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The tournament championship game, at Christopher Newport University, will take place on Saturday, March 1 at 4:00 p.m. The Cougars will be looking for their second consecutive championship while The Pride are attempting to capture their first championship in 13 years.
