Averett Captures USA South Men's Basketball Tournament Title

(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) - The 2008 USA South Men's Basketball Tournament concluded this afternoon, Saturday, March 1, as fifth-seeded Averett University defeated sixth-seeded Greensboro College, 77-56, to win the championship and advance to the NCAA Division-III Tournament.

The Cougars took control of the game early in the first half, built a ten-point halftime lead and won by 21 points. Averett was led by Tournament MVP Jonathan Rumley who scored a team-high 20 points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds and seven assists. Rumley led a balanced Cougar attack as five players reached double-figures in points. The Pride was led by Adam Nicholson who scored a game-high 27 points with four rebounds.

With the win, Averett captures its second consecutive tournament title. The NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced on Monday, March 3 on ncaasports.com at approximately Noon.
