USA South Men's Soccer Awards Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) -
The USA South Athletic
Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for men's soccer. A
total of 42 student-athletes have been named to the USA South
All-Conference teams. North Carolina Wesleyan College's Danny Persson has been
named the Player of the Year, Winston Mattheisen of Christopher Newport
University is the
Rookie of the Year and his coach, Steve Shaw, is the Coach of the Year.
Also, the USA
South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member
from each competing school. All awards are voted on by the men's soccer coach at each institution.
Persson, a junior forward from Umea, Sweden, earned First Team
All-Conference honors as helped lead the
Bishop offense this fall. Persson led the USA South in points and goals
as he tallied 52 points on 23 goals with six assists. His point and
goal totals each set new N.C. Wesleyan single-season records. Additionally, Persson was tied
for the league-lead in game-winning goals with four. Finally, Persson was named USA
South Player of the Week three times this fall.
Mattheisen, a Norfolk,
Virginia freshman forward, led the
USA South rookies and the Captain offense with 30 points and 14 goals.
Mattheisen also added two assists and was tied for first in the league
with four game-winning goals. He earned First Team All-Conference accolades to
go along with three USA South Rookie of the Week honors.
Shaw, in his 13th season as the head of the Captains, earned his fifth
coach of the year honor. He took his team to their second regular season title in the last
three years, the program's fifth all-time crown. The Captains finished
the regular season with a 13-3-3 overall record and a 5-0-1 mark in USA
South play. Shaw takes his team into the semifinals of the USA South Men's Soccer
Tournament as the top-seed.
