March 10, 2008 USA South SAAC Initiates "Pennies for a Purpose" (FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has announced the start of its new spring community service initiative, "Pennies for a Purpose". This penny drive will begin immediately and continue until Sunday, April 6. Until that time, schools are encouraged to collect loose change which will later be donated to an organization of their choosing. This is the second community service program developed by the Conference SAAC as the "Cans Across the Conference" food drive, which takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday, was created in 2004. Through that campaign, USA Institutions have donated a total of 17,387 items to their local communities. Much like "Cans Across the Conference", "Pennies for a Purpose" will be a competition amongst the institutions in the Conference. The school raising the most money will be named competition champions. A weekly tally will be kept on the USA South SAAC's website (http://www.usasouth.net/developer/SAAC.shtml) to track the institutions' progress throughout the competition.
