USA South Men's Basketball Awards
Announced
(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference
has announced its All-Conference awards for men's basketball. A
total of 20 student-athletes have been named to the USA South
All-Conference teams for men's basketball. Averett University swept the
individual awards as Jonathan Rumley was chosen as the Player of the Year,
Kenny Hart was named the Rookie of the Year and Jimmy Allen collected Coach of the Year honors.
Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of
one member from each competing school. All awards are voted on by the
men's basketball coach at each institution.
Rumley, a senior guard from
Winston-Salem, North Carolina, was among the league leaders in several
different categories this season. He was second in scoring, second in
assists, second in steals and tied for sixth in rebounding. Rumley
averaged 17.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 2.3 steals per
contest. In USA South games alone, Rumley led the Conference in scoring,
assists and was tied atop the steals category. Rumley, who also was named First Team All-Conference
for the second consecutive year, was
named the league's player of the week six times this season.
A freshman forward from Suffolk, Virginia,
Hart had a stand-out year for the
Cougars. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest. In
Conference-only games, Hart led the league's rookies with a 12.8 points
per game average which additionally was good enough to rank 12th in the
entire USA South. For his efforts, Hart earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors while also being selected as the league's rookie
of the week seven times this season.
In his fifth year at the helm of the Cougars, Averett's Allen collects
his third coach of the year honor. Allen guided the Cougars to a share of its
fourth Regular Season USA South
Championship. This is Averett's third regular season crown in the last
four years. The Cougars concluded the regular season with an overall
record of 18-8 and a conference mark of 10-2 which tied Christopher
Newport atop the standings. Averett now looks to capture its third
consecutive USA South Tournament title.
