November 18, 2002 - For the second consecutive season, the Dixie Conference football championship came down to the last game of the year. And once again, it came down to Christopher Newport and Ferrum. Last year, the Captains edged out the Panthers 14-11 to finish tied for the Conference title. Both teams finished 5-1 in conference play, but because CNU defeated Ferrum head-to-head, they received the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. They went on to lose to Widener, 56-7. The same scenario played out again this year. The Captains defeated Ferrum 35-7 on Saturday, bringing
both teams' conference records to 5-1 and a share of the Conference
championship. Once again, because CNU won in head-to-head action, they
receive the automatic playoff bid. The Captains will travel to Washington,
PA to take on Washington & Jefferson Saturday at 12 pm. The Presidents
finished the regular season with an 8-2 overall record, including going
5-0 in Presidents Athletic Conference play. The winner of that game
will go on to play the winner of the Trinity/Mary Hardin Baylor match-up. ------------------------------------ |
