Commissioner Wiggs Named To Hall of Fame

January 30, 2004 – Adding another honor to her list of accomplishments, USA South Commissioner Rita Wiggs will be inducted into the Fayetteville Sports Club Hall of Fame.  This is just the second year of the Hall of Fame, which recognizes prominent athletic figures in the area.

Wiggs made history in 1971 when she became the first female basketball player named to the all-male city-county basketball team.  She played on teams with a combined 74-3 record.  The Fayetteville, NC native then went on to start all four of her years at UNC-Greensboro.  She received her master's degree from N.C. State, where she spent several years as legendary head coach Kay Yow's assistant.  Wiggs has also served as head basketball coach at Roane State Community College and a teacher in the Cumberland County School System.  She spent 13 years as the head women's basketball coach at Methodist College, seven of which she also served as Athletic Director.  Most recently, Wiggs has been the Commissioner of the USA South Athletic Conference since July of 2001.  She is a member of both the UNC-Greensboro and Methodist College Hall of Fames.

Wiggs will be joined in the class of 2004 by Massey Hill High School coach Young Howard, college and professional football star Marvin Powell, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, Douglas Byrd High School football coach Bob Paroli, former Stedman and Cape Fear coach Leon Brock and Fayetteville High coach and athletic administrator R.E. Kuper.  The induction ceremony will be held March 1 at the Highland Country Club in Fayetteville.
