Thirteen DIAC Baseball Players Named All-Region
May 20, 2003 – The
American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings have announced their
All-South Region Baseball Teams have been announced and the Dixie
Conference is represented by 12 student-athletes. Methodist's
Jesus Adames, David Reece and Kyle Johnson; Ferrum's Jason Beale, Thomas
Meeks, Kevin Griffin and Mickey Russell; Chowan's Nick Hagler;
Greensboro's Kevin Mong and Christopher Newport's Matt Turner, Chris
Phaup, Jeremy Elliot and Mike Cosby were all named All-South Region.

all
selected
to
the
First
Team.
Johnson
was
named
Second
Team.
Reece,
Griffin,
Russell,
Hagler,
Mong
and
Cosby
were
all
named
Honorable
Mention.
Adames was the Monarchs’ top hitter this season, batting .384 with 10 home runs, 32 RBIs, 13 doubles and 48 runs scored. He led Methodist in home runs, runs scored, total bases with 104 and stolen bases with 13. He was a first team All-Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection this season. Johnson hit .336 with three home runs, 25 RBIs and scored 29 runs. He was also a first-team All-DIAC selection this season. Reece was 11-1 on the season with 63 strikeouts.
- FC's Beale pitches and plays DH, while Meeks pitches and plays first base. Beale batted .430 with nine doubles, seven home runs and 38 RBI this season. He also went 9-2 on the mound this season with 77 strikeouts and a 2.59 ERA, earning Dixie Conference Pitcher of the Year honors. Beale was a first team Dixie All-Conference selection as both pitcher and designated hitter this season. Meeks batted .410 with six doubles, a triple, 12 homers, and 46 RBI. He was 7-0 on the mound, with 59 strikeouts and a 3.92 ERA. Meeks earned first team All-Conference at first base this season. Russell batted .311 with nine doubles, two triples, two homers, and 14 RBI. He was a first team All-Dixie selection this season. Griffin batted .361 with 10 doubles, two triples, three homers, and 28 RBI.
After batting .353, knocking in 32 RBI, and setting a new school record with stolen bases in a single season with 42, sophomore Hagler led the Braves in most offensive categories this season, including batting average, stolen bases, doubles (10), homeruns (8), and RBI.
Mong, a first baseman, hit .331 and had team-highs of 9 home runs and 45 RBI for The Pride. He compiled a .582 slugging percentage this year. Mong was named to the DIAC Second Team and earned GC baseball's most valuable player award.
Turner, who played in the outfield for the Captains, batted .371 with 15 homeruns and 59 RBI on the season. He had a .808 slugging percentage. Also in the outfield, Jeremy Elliot drove in 22 runs for the Captains while hitting .402. Third baseman Phaup contributed 13 home runs and 67 RBI for the Captains. He batted .399 for the year. Cosby compiled a 7-4 record with 110 strikeouts from the mound for the Captains.
