Twelve Players Named All-State

May 27, 2003 – The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association has announced it's All-State selections and the DIAC is represented by 12 players, including the Player of the Year.  Ferrum's Abe Naff was also named VaSID Coach of the Year. 

Christopher Newport senior outfielder Matt Turner was named Player of the Year and Naff was named Coach of the Year, as voted on by members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Turner, a Newport News, VA native, is currently hitting .379 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.  Turner is also currently ranked in the nation in several offensive categories including triples per game and RBIs per contest.  Turner was named the Dixie Conference’s Player of the Year, First Team All-Dixie Conference selection, First Team All-Region choice and also earned First Team All-America hon

Naff, Ferrum’s Head Coach for 17 seasons, led his team to a first place finish in the Dixie Conference’s regular season and a 29-6 record.  Naff was also named the Dixie Conference’s Coach of the Year.

Averett's Gene Yost, Greg Stevens and Eddie Guessford; Ferrum's Jason Beale and Thomas Meeks and Christopher Newport's Chris Phaup, Turner and Jeremy Elliot were all named First Team All-State.

Ferrum's Mickey Russell and Neil Zimmerman and Christopher Newport's Matt Lewellen were selected Honorable Mention.  Beale was also Honorable Mention as a pitcher.
