Three Football Players Named to Team of the Week

October 6, 2004 - Following Saturday's games, three USA South football players have been named to d3football.com's national Team of the Week.  On the defensive side, Shenandoah's Mike Guerra was recognized for his efforts in the Hornets' 14-10 upset over Christopher Newport.  Two Averett players were honored for Special Teams.  James Thurnes and Anthony Morris excelled in the Cougars' 46-44 triple overtime win against Ferrum.

Guerra had a game-high nine tackles (seven solo) and two for loss in a 14-10 win against No. 19 Christopher Newport.

K James Thurnes, So., Averett
Trailing Ferrum 31-28 in the first overtime, Thurnes hit a 40-yard field goal to force a second overtime in an eventual 46-44 triple-overtime win. He also made all five of his extra-point attempts. As punter, he pinned Ferrum inside its 10 on four occasions, and inside the 3-yard line three times.

ST Anthony Morris, Sr., Averett
Morris blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt by Ferrum at the end of the first half, then intercepted Ferrum's two-point conversion pass in the third overtime, setting up Averett's win in the third extra frame.
