Football All-Conference Teams Named
November 20, 2003 - The USA South Athletic Conference has
announced its 2003 Football All-Conference
selections. The players are voted on by the coaches at each institution.
Ferrum's Moncrief Holmes has been named the Offensive Player of the
Year. The senior fullback averaged 103.2 yards rushing per game.
The Yorktown, VA native scored five touchdowns for the Panthers.
This is Holmes' second year on the First Team All-Conference.
Fellow Panther Darren Venable is the Defensive Player of the Year.
The defensive back recorded 32 solo and 42 assisted tackles this season.
The junior from Covington, VA was Second Team All-Conference in 2001 and
First Team in 2002 and this year. This is the second consecutive
year Venable has been named Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Christopher Newport's George Jones is the Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The wide receiver averaged 68 yards per game for the Captains. The
New Kent, VA freshman scored five touchdowns during the season.
Ronnie Fields from Chowan is the Defensive Rookie of the Year. The
defensive back from New Bern, NC recorded 27 solo and 26 assisted
tackles for the Braves this season.
Averett's Mike Dunlevy has been named the Coach of the Year. In
his second year, the Cougars finished the season with a 5-4 record,
including going 3-3 in Conference play. The team was 2-7, 0-6 in
2001, then 2-7, 1-5 in 2002, Dunlevy's first at the helm.
