Salisbury Sends Christopher Newport Packing With 5-1 Win

(DANVILLE, VA) - The Seagulls of Salisbury University defeated the Christopher Newport University Captains on Friday afternoon, 5-1, in game seven of the NCAA South Regional Baseball Tournament.

The Seagulls crossed the first run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning. Matt Bostwick smacked a double to the right-center wall and eventually scored on a grounder from Matt O’Keefe. Christopher Newport then tied the game in the sixth after Mike Giarrizzi reached on a single and scored on a Trae Bailey double to right field.

In the next inning, Salisbury picked up three runs on two hits with two errors and a wild pitch that scored a runner. Capitalizing on the Captains mistakes, and crossing an insurance run in the ninth inning, the Seagulls secured the victory and eliminated Christopher Newport.

Andrew Miller had two hits and a run batted in for Salisbury, while Alex Owen led CNU with a pair of hits. Ryan Bennick pitched a complete-game for SU, taking the victory while allowing only six hits. Kyle Baumann took the loss for CNU, giving up four runs over eight innings pitched.

Salisbury now advances to its next game, tonight, against the Hornets of Lynchburg College starting at 7:30 p.m.
