Two USA South Football Players Named to Good Works Team
September 17, 2003 – The American Football Coaches
Association has just announced its 2003 Good Works Team and two USA
South athletes have been among those honored. Averett's Les
Garnett and Chowan's Craig Janney were both named to the team that
recognizes players for their dedication and commitment to community
service.
The criteria for the team members is as follows: nominations were
submitted to the AFCA by the college sports information department.
Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a
charitable organization, service group or involved in other community
service activities. They have to display sincere concern and
reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the
organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is
not a criteria.

Garnett, a junior
outside linebacker, is a member of the Danville Big Brothers. He
serves as a YMCA youth basketball coach, has volunteered to help special
needs student for a semester at Park Avenue Elementary School and has
also volunteered for Field Day at park Avenue Elementary and Forrest
Hills Elementary in Danville. The Hague, VA native reads to students at
Apple Tree Elementary and volunteers for Upward Bound, a program to help
minority students get information about colleges.
Janney,
a senior punter/place-kicker, is the vice president of Chowan’s
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as a member of the
Praise Band, the College Band affiliated with the campus chapel.
The native of Vinton, VA has been on both the Dean’s and President’s
Lists. He serves as a youth minister for Murfreesboro Methodist
Church, is involved with Habitat for Humanity and developed Mow and Go,
Rake and Run, a program for older people in the church congregation who
need help with their lawns. Janney is also a “Locks and
Love” donor, where he donates his hair for wigs for cancer patients.
