Men's Tennis All-Conference Teams Named
April 22, 2003 - The Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has
announced its 2003 Men's Tennis All-Conference
selections. The First and Second All-Conference Teams are
determined by the top finishers at the Conference tournament, held April
18-19. The major award winners are voted on by the tennis coaches and
Sports Information Directors at each institution.
Ferrum's Gary Holden is the 2003 Coach of the Year. His Panthers
went 15-3 this season, improving from last year's 5-11 record The team
had two All-Conference finishes (#5 singles, #3 doubles) and scored 30
points, a Dixie Tournament new school record.
Veli-Pekka Antila of Averett
has been named the Player of the Year. He was undefeated in
the Conference play, and won the title at number one singles and number
one doubles at the Tournament. He and teammate Mikko Hermans were also
undefeated in doubles this season.
Ferrum's Gabe Zakkak is the Rookie of the Year. He compiled a 22-5
singles, 15-10 doubles record. He finished 3rd in Dixie Conference
at #1 singles and was a semifinalist at #1 doubles.
