Seven Volleyball Players Named All-State

December 5, 2003 - The Virginia Sports Information Directors have announced their 2003 All-State Volleyball team and seven USA South players are among those honored.  Averett's Courtney Carrington leads the pack, as she has been named VaSID's Player of the Year.

Carrington, a senior outside hitter from Yadkinville, NC, earned 2003 USA South Conference Player of the Year honors after she helped the Cougars to a 31-10 overall record and a conference tournament championship. She averaged 2.99 kills per game, but was also a solid defender, while passing 2.59 digs an outing. Carrington was named to the All-USA South Tournament Team and was selected to the All-VaSID second team in 2002. She finished her career with 991 kills and 1,186 digs.

Fellow Cougar Courtney Peters was the only other USA South player to be named to the First Team All-State.  Peters led Averett in kills (3.33 kills per game), and ranked second in the nation with a .452 hitting percentage. The sophomore middle hitter from Henrico, NC earned All-USA South first team honors, as well as USA South Tournament MVP honors. Peters was twice named the conference Player of the Week, and was an honorable mention on the All-South Region Team.

Christopher Newport's Amber Bradshaw, Erin Bradshaw and Jenna Williams have all been named to the Second Team.  Amber Bradshaw led the Captains with 3.54 kills and 2.51 digs per game this season.  Erin Bradshaw led the team with 8.41 assists per game.  The twin sisters are sophomores from Chesapeake, VA and were both named to the All-Conference First Team this season.  Williams, a freshman from Manassas, VA, averaged 3 kills and 2.63 digs per game for the year. 

Shenandoah's Jenny Gray was also named to the All-State Second Team.  The sophomore from Sumerduck, VA averaged 3.55 kills and 3.5 digs per game for the Hornets this year.  She was recognized as Second Team All-Conference for her accomplishments. 

Averett's Erin Moore rounds out the USA South representatives on the All-State Second Team.  The senior from Elon, NC averaged 2.43 kills for the Cougars this season.  She is a two-time Second Team All-Conference member.
