Athletes of the Week

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Tunde Ogun, Christopher Newport - The sophomore running back from Richmond, Virginia carried the ball 21 times for 55 yards with two touchdowns in the Captains, 23-17, victory over tenth-ranked Rowan. He also caught two passes for 25 yards. Ogun's touchdowns came on runs of four and three yards. The Captain victory was the first over the Profs in six tries. Also nominated: Orlando Webb, N.C. Wesleyan; Ronnie Edwards, Ferrum.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
          Matt Long, Christopher Newport - The Virginia Beach, Virginia sophomore safety set a new school record for interceptions in a game with three in the win over tenth-tanked Rowan. Long's third and final interception took place on the final Rowan drive of the game, preserving the Captain win. Long also had five solo tackles and assisted on six others. He had 1.5 tackles for loss including a two-yard sack and four pass break-ups. Also nominated: Reshard Patterson, N.C. Wesleyan; Kyle Chewning, Maryville.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
          Dustin Locke, Maryville - The Naples, Florida junior kick returner had three punt returns for 64 yards, good for a 21.3 average, in the Scots, 21-3, victory over LaGrange. Locke also added a 17-yard kickoff return.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
           Eric Hatchett, Greensboro - The senior forward from Gibsonville, North Carolina scored the only goal of the match as The Pride upset top-ranked and three-time defending national champion Messiah, 1-0. Hatchett's goal handed the Falcons their first regular season defeat in three seasons. Hatchett then tallied a score in Greensboro's, 5-0, victory over Eastern Mennonite the following day. Also nominated: Danny Jones, N.C. Wesleyan; Bret Brennan, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Kurt Gardiner, Greensboro - The senior goalkeeper from Jacksonville, North Carolina was 2-0 last week, including a shutout versus top-ranked and three-time defending nation champion Messiah, 1-0. Gardiner stopped all five shots he faced in the upset win over the Falcons. He then started and played in all but 15 minutes of The Pride's, 5-0, victory over Eastern Mennonite the following day. Also nominated: Philip Fritschmann, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Jenn Campbell, Christopher Newport - The Springfield, Virginia sophomore forward scored three goals in a 2-0 week for the Lady Captains. In a 3-0 win over Guilford, Campbell scored twice, including the game-winner, on four total shots. She then scored the first goal of the game to put CNU on top early as the Lady Captains defeated 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 4-1. Also nominated: Ashley Cabral, Greensboro; Meredith Hester, N.C. Wesleyan; Michelle Anderson, Methodist; Stephanie Perih, Ferrum.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Bryanne Godfrey, N.C. Wesleyan - The Howell, New Jersey junior goalkeeper recorded a shutout in the Bishops only action last week. Godfrey helped N.C. Wesleyan to a 4-0 win over Sweet Briar by stopping all five shots she faced. Also nominated: Jackie Hurley, Christopher Newport; Shana Saganich, Greensboro; Erica Nath, Methodist.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Mindy Altice, Ferrum - The senior outside hitter from Wirtz, Virginia recorded 84 kills, a .353 hitting percentage, 19 digs and seven blocks as the Panthers went 2-2 last week. Altice tallied double-figure kill totals in each match including a week-high of 31 in a 3-2 victory over Randolph. In Ferrum's other victory of the week, a 3-2 win over Chowan, Altice recorded 25 kills with six digs, three blocks and one service ace. In the Panther's two losses, Altice totaled 28 kills, nine digs, one block and one service ace. Also nominated: Samantha Kirby, Averett; Colena Roberts, Mary Baldwin; Sara Yeatman, Methodist; Keshia Judd, Greensboro; Michelle Chandler, Shenandoah.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Joy Daniels, Greensboro - The senior defensive specialist from Wanchese, North Carolina recorded team highs for digs in each match last week as The Pride was 1-3 at the Cougar Classic. Daniels totaled at least 24 digs in three of the four matches while averaging 5.29 digs per game. She also contributed four kills, 15 assists and six service aces during the week. Daniels recorded a week-high 29 digs, along with four kills, three assists and one service ace in a 3-2 win over Mary Washington. She assisted on a week-best 12 kills with two service aces and 24 digs in a 3-1 loss to Roanoke. For her efforts last week, Daniels was named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team. Also nominated: Jordan Grady, Methodist; Jordan Maupin, Averett; Tiffany Walker, Ferrum.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          David Woodson, Christopher Newport - The Gloucester, Virginia junior helped the Captains finish fourth out of nine teams at the Sea Gull Opener. Woodson placed seventh out of 89 runners with a time of 26:52, a new personal best.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
          Amy Wampler, Christopher Newport - The sophomore from Spotsylvania, Virginia helped the Lady Captains finish second out of eight teams at the Sea Gull Opener. Wampler placed third out of 64 runners with a time of 23:34, a new personal best.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Jack Breyman, Maryville - The freshman defensive lineman from Gulf Coast, Florida scored a touchdown on an eight-yard fumble recovery in Maryville's, 21-3, victory over LaGrange. Breyman also had one sack as the Scots set a new school record for sacks in a game with nine. Also nominated: Adrin Diggs, Christopher Newport.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Tyler Clare, Christopher Newport - The freshman forward from Williamsburg, Virginia scored three goals in the Captains 1-1 week. In his first collegiate game, Clare helped CNU to a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite by scoring twice. He then scored the Captains lone goal in a 3-1 loss to top-ranked Messiah. For the two games, Clare totaled six shots, four of which were on goal. Also nominated: Grayson Leonard, Greensboro; Marco Kirsch, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Michele Reger, Greensboro - The Mahopac, New York freshman midfielder helped The Pride to a 3-0 win over Hood in their only game last week. Reger scored her first collegiate goal, which proved to be the game-winner, while also adding an assist in the win. Also nominated: Becca Grady, Christopher Newport; Kelsey Walters, Ferrum.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
          Michelle Gabson, Greensboro - The freshman middle hitter from Apex, North Carolina totaled 44 kills, 35 digs, eight service aces and three blocks in three matches last week. Gabson tallied back-to-back double-doubles as she contributed 18 kills and 14 digs in a 3-2 loss to Maryville then followed with 13 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 loss to Roanoke. In her only other match of the week, a 3-0 loss to nationally-ranked Austin, Gabson had a team-high 13 kills with nine digs, one service ace and one block. Also nominated: Angie Paz, Methodist; Elizabeth Evanoff, Peace.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          None

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
          Edie Nault, Christopher Newport - The Poquoson, Virginia freshman, competing in her first collegiate race, finished 9th out of 64 runners at the Sea Gull Opener. Her time of 24:35 helped the Lady Captains to a second place finish in the event.
