Athletes of the Week

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
          Antwin Shuford, Methodist - The junior forward from Statesville, North Carolina led the Monarchs to a 100-83 victory over Piedmont in the team's only action last week. Shuford had a co-team high 19 points on 9-of-11 (82%) shooting from the floor. He also grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists, had three steals and blocked one shot in the win. Also Nominated: Theo Baker, Christopher Newport; Adam Nicholson, Greensboro; Jarvis Cobb, N.C. Wesleyan; Cory McDaniel, Averett.

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
         Miranda Carrasco, Ferrum - The Roanoke, Virginia junior guard led the Panthers to a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In the two contests, Carrasco averaged 18.0 points, on 58% shooting from the floor (14-of-24), with 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. In a 71-57 win over Mary Baldwin, Carrasco scored a co-game high 19 points on 67% shooting from the floor (8-of-12). She also added four rebounds and a team-high three assists in the victory. In an 88-71 win over Meredith, Carrasco had 17 points with five rebounds, four assists and one steal. Also Nominated: Brittany Cornelius, Meredith; Colandra Rollins, Christopher Newport; Darcie Jones, Averett; Kara Hawkins, Mary Baldwin.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
      LeuMichael Smith, Methodist - The Clarkton, North Carolina freshman guard helped the Monarchs to a 100-83 victory over Piedmont in the team's only action last week. Smith tallied a co-team high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor and a 6-of-9 performance at the free throw line. Smith also contributed seven rebounds, a game-high six steals and two assists in the win. Also Nominated: Conley Taylor, Christopher Newport.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
      Chelsie Schweers, Christopher Newport - The freshman guard from Chesapeake, Virginia helped
the Captains to a 2-0 last week. In the two contests, Schweers averaged 26.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. In a 75-60 win over Roanoke, Schweers scored a game-high 28 points with six rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block. In a 70-66 victory over USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Schweers had a team-high 25 points with five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Also Nominated: Kierra Parker, Ferrum; Sabrina Allen, Averett; Iiesha Ricks, Mary Baldwin.
