Athletes of the Week

Football Offensive Player of the Week
          Cedric Townsend, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior quarterback from Kenansville, North Carolina accumulated 328 yards of total offense and accounted for five touchdowns in a 42-32 win over USA South rival Christopher Newport. Townsend was 15-of-26 passing for 215 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, Townsend ran 21 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns. With the win, the Bishops are undefeated in league play and sit alone atop the USA South standings. Also Nominated: Antonio Hammond, Averett; Darnell Walker, Greensboro; Jesse Bradshaw, Christopher Newport; Kevin Roberts, Shenandoah; Nick Moore, Maryville; Brandon Parks, Methodist.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
          Koby King, Methodist - The Mt. Gilead, North Carolina sophomore free safety led the Monarchs in tackles and grabbed an interception in a, 27-23, win over USA South foe Maryville. King accumulated 18 total tackles, including six solo take downs. King's interception came in the second quarter and led to a Methodist touchdown which put the Monarchs ahead 13-7. Finally, King was also credited with a pass break-up in the win. Also nominated: Scott Stevens, Maryville;  Jason Crew, Shenandoah, Devon Morrison, Greensboro; Griffin McConaghy, Averett; Justin Augustin, N.C. Wesleyan; Shaun Green, Ferrum.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
          Calvin Taylor, Maryville - The Seffner, Florida senior blocked two kicks in a, 27-23, loss to USA South foe Methodist. Both of Taylor's blocks came in the second quarter as he thwarted an extra point attempt midway through the period then a field goal at the end of the half. Taylor also added a solo tackle on special teams in the loss.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
           Alimamy Kargbo, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior forward from Woodbridge, Virginia scored a goal and added an assist in the only action for the Bishops last week. In a 2-1 win over USA South rival Christopher Newport, Kargbo scored the game's first goal and assisted on the eventual game-winner. The victory earned the Bishops an undefeated league record and the USA South Regular Season Championship. Also Nominated: Chris Wondree, Shenandoah; Bret Brennan, Methodist; Robert Fricke, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
           Alberto Faisca, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman goalkeeper from Brunswick, Maryland earned the win in the Bishops, 2-1, victory over USA South rival Christopher Newport. Faisca made four saves on six total shots as the Bishops clinched the USA South Regular Season Championship.

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
          Whitney Roberson, Methodist - The Kitty Hawk, North Carolina sophomore forward scored a key goal in a critical conference match-up last week and helped the Monarchs capture the USA South Regular Season Championship. In a 2-1 win over Greensboro, Roberson scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute to break a 1-1 tie. The Monarchs then defeated Meredith, 1-0, to finished the regular season undefeated in USA South play. Also Nominated: Ashley Cabral, Greensboro; Reva McCloud, N.C. Wesleyan; Corinne Musanti, Ferrum; Nicole Boucher, Meredith.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
          Katie Hodkinson, Ferrum - The Mt. Crawford, Virginia freshman goalkeeper posted two shutouts in USA South play last week for the Panthers. In a 6-0 win over Averett, Hodkinson made four saves on five total shots. In a 1-0 win over Shenandoah, Hodkinson picked up her fourth shutout of the season as she stopped two potential scores. Also Nominated: Tessa Hall, Greensboro.

Volleyball Player of the Week
         Kacie Hyatt, Greensboro - The sophomore outside hitter from Randleman, North Carolina helped The Pride to a 3-1 record last week by averaging a double-double of 17.5 kills and 13.5 digs per match. In 16 games, Hyatt posted 70 kills, 54 digs, 12 service aces, nine blocks and two assists. In a 3-1 win over USA South foe Averett, Hyatt had a team-high 24 kills and a match-high 27 digs to go along with three service aces, two blocks and one assist. In a 3-1 loss to Bridgewater, Hyatt contributed 14 kills, 11 digs and two blocks. In a 3-1 win over USA South rival Meredith, Hyatt tallied her third double-double of the week with a match-high 18 kills and ten digs. Hyatt also added three service aces and one assist in the win. Finally, in a 3-1 win over USA South foe Shenandoah, Hyatt had 14 kills, six service aces, six digs and five blocks. Also nominated: Ellen Koch, Christopher Newport; Samantha Kirby, Averett; Allison Averitt, Methodist; Brittany Insley, N.C. Wesleyan; Lindsey McEvoy, Meredith; Christie Hamilton, Mary Baldwin.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
         Christie Kirby, Christopher Newport - The sophomore defensive specialist from Manassas, Virginia helped the Captains to a 5-0 record last week. In 15 games, Kirby posted 50 digs, six service aces and two assists. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe Shenandoah, Kirby had six digs and one service ace. In a 3-0 win over league rival Averett, Kirby tallied 11 digs with three service aces. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe Ferrum, Kirby contributed nine digs and one service ace as CNU finished the season with an unblemished Conference record. In a 3-0 win over Salisbury, Kirby had 12 digs and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Kirby collected 12 digs and two assists. Also nominated: Meredith Schwane, Averett; Jordan Grady, Methodist, Kristin Guffey, Mary Baldwin.

 

Rookies of the Week

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
          Te'Varaz Fullmore, Methodist - The freshman wide receiver from Burlington, North Carolina caught four passes for 100 yards with two touchdowns in a, 27-23, win over USA South foe Maryville. Fullmore's ten-yard touchdown reception with 2:23 remaining in the second half turned out to be the game-winning score. His other touchdown catch went for 66 yards in the final minute of the first half. Also Nominated: Quintel Banks, Ferrum.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
          Zack Leonard, Ferrum - The freshman defensive end from Roanoke,  Virginia made 11 total tackles in a 21-7 win over USA South foe Greensboro. Leonard accumulated two solo take downs and 4.5 tackles for a total loss of 28 yards, including 2.5 sacks.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          B.J. Godwin, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman forward from Pocomoke, Maryland scored the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over USA South rival Christopher Newport in the Bishops' only action last week. Godwin's score came in the 30th minute of play, giving the Bishops a 2-0 lead. The victory clinched the USA South Regular Season Championship for N.C. Wesleyan. Also Nominated: Murray Williamson, Methodist.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
          Hevyn Diers, Methodist - The Tappan, New York freshman midfielder scored one goal and added one assist in two USA South wins for the Monarchs last week. In a 2-1 victory over Greensboro, Diers assisted on the game-winning goal which was scored in the 80th minute. In a 1-0 win at Meredith, Diers scored the lone and game-winning goal of the game early in the second half. The victory over the Avenging Angels earned the Monarchs the USA South Regular Season Championship. Also nominated: Kaitlin Naill, Shenandoah; Sam Ciaravino, Christopher Newport; Alex Calvert, Meredith; Michelle Reger, Greensboro.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
          Michelle Gabson, Greensboro - The freshman middle hitter from Apex, North Carolina helped The Pride to a 3-1 record last week by averaging a double-double of 15.3 kills and 10.3 digs per match. In 16 games, Gabson posted 61 kills, 41 digs, five blocks, four service aces and two assists. In a 3-1 win over USA South foe Averett, Gabson tallied a double-double of 19 kills and 11 digs. She also added two blocks and one service ace in the victory. In a 3-1 loss to Bridgewater, Gabson notched her second double-double of the week with 12 kills and 14 digs. She also added two blocks and one assist in the loss. In a 3-1 win over USA South rival Meredith, Gabson collected 16 kills, seven digs, three service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-1 win over USA South foe Shenandoah, Gabson had 14 kills, nine digs and one block.
