Athletes of the Week

Baseball Player of the Week
         Chris Despins, Christopher Newport - The sophomore first baseman from Oak Hill, Virginia hit .833 (5-for-6) with six runs scored, six RBI, two walks, two doubles and two homeruns in a two-game sweep of USA South rival Averett in the Captains' only action last week. In a 12-0, seven-inning game-one win, Despins was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a three-run home run, four RBI and four runs scored. In a 6-2, game-two victory, Despins finished 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, two RBI, two runs scored and two intentional walks. Despins finished the sweep with an .875 on-base percentage. Also Nominated: Kenly Locklear, Methodist; Dan Poindexter, Greensboro; Michael Moore, Averett.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
         Kit Mock, Greensboro - The Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania senior collected two wins in two starts with a 1.20 ERA last week for The Pride. In a 17-1 win over Lake Erie, Mock pitched seven-complete innings, giving up one run on four hits with one one walk and five strikeouts. In a 6-5 victory over 20th-ranked USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Mock tossed eight innings, giving up two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kenny Moreland, Christopher Newport; Matt Davis, Shenandoah; Fred Geisinger, Methodist; Jacob Waller, Averett.

Softball Player of the Week
         Joanie Blevins, Peace - The senior third baseman from Thurmond, North Carolina hit .769 (10-for-13) with five runs scored, five RBI, three stolen bases, one double, one sacrifice hit and one walk as the Pacers went 4-0 last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Maryville, Blevins went a perfect 7-for-7 with four RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases. In a doubleheader sweep of Fayetteville State, Blevins went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, one run batted in, one walk, one double, one stolen base and one sacrifice hit. Also nominated: Ashlee Bass, N.C. Wesleyan; Margit Severin, Christopher Newport; Kayla Talbert, Methodist; Britney Smith, Greensboro.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
         Lesley Hewitt, Methodist - The Garner, North Carolina junior appeared in five games for the Monarchs last week, earning a 3-0 record with one save and a 1.25 ERA. Hewitt tossed a total of 22.1 innings for the week, giving up six runs, four of which were earned, on 22 hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Hewitt earned victories over Augustana, 18th-ranked Muskingum and 5th-ranked Wartburg. Hewitt's save came in a win over Wittenberg. Also nominated: Kristen Bruce, Christopher Newport; Stacie Patterson, Greensboro; Ashley Stansbury, Peace; Libby Fulford, N.C. Wesleyan.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
         Andrea DiStefano, Methodist - The Albany, New York junior attacker totaled 19 points on 14 goals and five assists with eight ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers as the Monarchs went 1-3 last week. In a 20-7 win over the Savannah College of Art & Design, DiStefano tallied nine points on five goals and four assists while adding four ground balls and two draw controls. In each of the Monarchs three losses, DiStefano tallied three scores.

         None

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
        David Sutton, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina senior was 3-0 at number-one singles and 3-1 at number-two doubles last week for The Pride. Sutton dropped just one set last week in singles play, earning wins over players from Emory & Henry, Wartburg and Eastern Pa. In doubles action, Sutton teamed with Tim Leyson to earn three wins. Also Nominated: Eddie Glidewell, Christopher Newport; Chris Fletcher, Methodist.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
        Carrie Pacifico, Greensboro - The Charleston, West Virginia senior
was 4-0 at both number-one singles and number-one doubles last week for The Pride. Pacifico earned each of her singles victories in straight-set fashion, dropping just seven games for the week. In doubles action, Pacifico teamed with Susan Harris to earn the four wins. Also Nominated: Amanda Bitler, Meredith; Lindsey Pantele, Christopher Newport; Jenny Smith, Methodist.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
         Christian Frey, Shenandoah - The freshman shortstop from Manassas, Virginia hit .412 (7-for-17) with six RBI, three runs scored, two home runs, one stolen base and one sacrifice fly as the Hornets went 1-3 last week. In a 12-1 win over Roanoke, Frey was 1-for-4 with a home run, one run scored, two RBI and one sacrifice fly. In an 8-7 loss to Bridgewater, Frey was 2-for-5 with a home run, one run scored and three RBI. Finally, in two losses to Piedmont, Frey went a combined 4-for-8 with a stolen base, a run batted in and a run scored.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
         Alex Phetteplace, Greensboro - The Greensboro, North Carolina freshman earned his first collegiate win in a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg. Phetteplace came on for one inning of scoreless relief in the top of the third inning. He gave up one hit with one strikeout and saw The Pride score twice in the bottom of the inning which was just enough to earn a 3-1 win.

Softball Rookie of the Week
         Chelsea Gentry, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman catcher/first baseman from Roxboro, North Carolina hit .667 (10-for-15) with four runs scored, three RBI, four doubles, one walk and a .933 slugging percentage as the Bishops went 4-0 last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Penn. St.-Berks, Gentry was 5-for-8 with three doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. In a 9-0 win over Penn. St.-Altoona, Gentry was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and a run batted in. Finally, in a 10-7 victory over Sweet Briar, Gentry was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. Also Nominated: Jessica Hogan, Peace; Jody Eyler, Methodist.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
        Hannah Stutts, Methodist - The freshman from Statesville, North Carolina appeared in four games, three in relief, for the Monarchs last week, earning a 1-0 record with a 1.31 ERA. Stutts tossed a total of 10.2 innings giving up two runs on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts. In her only start of the week, Stutts pitched six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts to help Methodist earn an 8-2 win over Bluffton. Also Nominated: Kacie Brandes, N.C. Wesleyan.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
       Chrystal Bradley, Methodist - The senior midfielder from Fairfax, Virginia, playing her first year of collegiate lacrosse, scored nine goals and assisted on five others for a total of 14 points last week for the Monarchs. Bradley tallied four goals and three assists in Methodist's,
20-7, win over the Savannah College of Art & Design. In losses to Wilkes and Wesley, Bradley scored twice and three times, respectfully. Also Nominated: Sara Mucciaro, Shenandoah.

Men's Tennis Rookie Player of the Week
      Lorenzo Sison, Christopher Newport - The Williamsburg, Virginia freshman did not lose a game in two matches last week for the Captains. In the team's only action, a 9-0 win over Chowan, Sison was victorious at the number-four singles position and the number-two doubles spot. Also Nominated: Tariq Sheikh, Methodist.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
        Kaitlin Flaherty, Methodist - The League City, Texas freshman went 2-0 at both number-two singles and number-two doubles last week for the Monarchs. In a singles victory over St. Scholastica's previously unbeaten player, Flaherty forced a third-set tiebreaker by winning the second set after dropping the first. Flaherty won that tie breaker to win the match, 4-6, 6-1, (10-1). Her doubles victory was against a St. Scholastica team which had been undefeated as well. Also Nominated: Lisa Dyke, Christopher Newport; Molly Parks, Meredith.
