Athletes of the Week

Baseball Player of the Week
         Justin Batts, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior catcher from Wilson, North Carolina hit .524 (11-for-21) with eight RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles, one triple, one home run, one walk and a .857 slugging percentage as the Bishops went 4-1 last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Capital, Batts was 3-for-7 with two runs scored, two RBI, one double and one walk. In a 15-2 victory over Ramapo, Batts was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and two doubles. Finally, in a two-game split with USA South foe Christopher Newport, Batts was 4-for-10 with four RBI, two runs scored, a triple and a home run. Also Nominated: Scott Lambert, Shenandoah; Brad Davis, Methodist; Dan Poindexter, Greensboro; Jacob Waller, Averett.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
         Matt Davis, Shenandoah - The Syracuse, New York junior tossed a complete-game shutout in his only action last week for the Hornets. Davis gave up just three hits with one walk and three strikeouts as Shenandoah defeated Bridgewater, 2-0. The shutout and complete game were career firsts for Davis. Also nominated: Justin Crowl, Averett; Kevin Showe, Greensboro; Kenny Moreland, Christopher Newport.

Softball Player of the Week
         Catherine Beuerle, Shenandoah - The junior catcher/first baseman from Lynchburg, Virginia hit .667 (8-for-12) with 11 RBI, eight runs scored, three walks, two doubles and two home runs as the Hornets went 4-0 last week. In a doubleheader sweep at Hood, Beuerle was 5-for-7 with seven RBI, five runs scored, two walks and two home runs. In a doubleheader sweep of Penn. State-Harrisburg, Beuerle was 3-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and one walk. Also nominated: Crystal Metzger, Methodist; Megan Morris, Christopher Newport; Amber Littesy, Meredith; Joanie Blevins, Peace.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
         Ashley Stansbury, Peace - The Rougemont, North Carolina sophomore appeared in three games for the Pacers last week, earning a 2-0 record. Stansbury pitched a total of 15 innings for the week, giving up four runs on nine hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts. In a 3-1 loss to 11th-ranked Lynchburg, Stansbury came on in relief to pitch three innings, giving up just one run. In an 8-3 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Stansbury threw seven-complete innings, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks and one strikeout. Finally, in a 21-0, five-inning, win over Keystone, Stansbury struck-out 11 batters en route to tossing her first-career no-hitter. In addition to her performance in the pitching circle, Stansbury was 4-for-14 with seven runs scored and five RBI at the plate last week. Also nominated: Katie Haskins, Shenandoah.

         None

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
        Chris Fletcher, Methodist - The New Castle, New Hampshire senior was 2-0 at both number-one singles and doubles last week for the Monarchs. Fletcher earned straight-set singles wins over top players from Oglethorpe and Sewanee. In doubles action, Fletcher teamed with Matthew Taylor to earn both victories. Also Nominated: David Sutton, Greensboro.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
        Tiffany Tucker, Methodist - The Circleville, Ohio senior is 4-1 at number-one singles and 3-1 at the top doubles spot so far this season for the Monarchs. Three of the four singles victories for Tucker have been of the straight-set variety. Her only loss of the season came at the hands of the 12th-ranked player in the region. In doubles play, she has teamed with Jenny Smith to earn wins over top teams from Fayetteville State, Misericordia and St. Mary's (MD). Also Nominated: Lindsey Pantele, Christopher Newport; Kathryn Maples, Meredith.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
         Adam Higgins, Averett - The freshman centerfielder from Quinton, Virginia hit .368 (7-for-19) with three runs scored and two stolen bases as the Cougars went 0-4 last week. In a 14-2 loss to Lynchburg, Higgins was 3-for-4 at the plate. In game-one of two losses to USA South foe Ferrum, Higgins was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Justin Rahm, N.C. Wesleyan.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
         Greg Van Sickler, Shenandoah - The Stephenson, Virginia freshman pitched eight innings and picked the win over USA South rival Methodist to open league play last week. Van Sickler allowed three runs on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts to help lead the Hornets to a 7-3 win.

Softball Rookie of the Week
         Kasie Moore, Peace - The freshman left fielder from Clayton, North Carolina hit .471 (8-for-17) with 11 RBI, nine runs scored, six walks, five doubles, three stolen bases, one triple and one home run as the Pacers went 5-1 last week. In an 8-3 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Moore was 2-for-4 with one run scored, three RBI, one double and a home run. In a doubleheader sweep of Keystone, Moore went a combined 3-for-6 with five runs scored, four RBI, three doubles, three walks and one stolen base. Also nominated: Catherine Pruiett, Shenandoah; Kayla McLean, Methodist.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
        Hannah Stutts, Methodist - The freshman from Statesville, North Carolina earned a complete-game victory in her only appearance for the Monarchs last week. Stutts tossed seven innings, giving up one run on five hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts as Methodist defeated Frostburg State, 5-1. Also Nominated: Becki Roebock, Meredith.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
       Kaitlin Quigley, Christopher Newport - The freshman attacker from Round Hill, Virginia scored a third of the Captains' goals in a 13-6 loss to 12th-ranked Washington & Lee. Coming off the bench, Quigley scored twice in the defeat.

Men's Tennis Rookie Player of the Week
      Antti Saari, N.C. Wesleyan - The Lahti, Finland freshman went 3-0 at both number one singles and doubles last week for the Bishops. Saari earned straight-set singles wins over top players from Chowan, N.C. Central and Guilford. In doubles action, Saari teamed with Brandon Coleman to earn the three victories. Also Nominated: Lorenzo Sison, Christopher Newport.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
        Kaitlin Flaherty, Methodist - The League City, Texas freshman is 3-1 at number-two singles and 4-1 in the doubles action so far this season for the Monarchs. In her three singles victories, her opponents have combined to earn just ten total games. Her only loss of the season came at the hands of the 20th-ranked player in the region. In doubles play, she has teamed with Leighton Bull to to 3-1 at number-two doubles and 1-0 at number-one doubles. Also Nominated: Lisa Dyke, Christopher Newport; Molly Parks, Meredith.
