Athletes of the Week

Baseball Player of the Week
         Matt Smith, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior center fielder from Stedman, North Carolina hit 727 (7-for-11) with seven runs scored, three RBI, two doubles and two walks as the Bishops went 3-0 last week. In a 11-3 win over Hampden-Sydney, Smith was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, one run batted in, one double and one stolen base. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South rival Averett, Smith was a combined 4-for-6 with four runs scored, two RBI, two walks, one double, one sacrifice fly and one sacrifice hit. Also Nominated: Seth Kivett, Methodist; Trae Bailey, Christopher Newport; Jake Loye, Averett; Josh Simons, Shenandoah; Jesse Fuller, Ferrum.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week
         Taylor DuFrene, Shenandoah - The Newport News, Virginia senior earned a complete-game victory over USA South foe Ferrum in his only appearance for the Hornets last week. Over eight innings pitched, DuFrene gave up two earned runs, three total, on nine hits with one walk and seven strikeouts as Shenandoah collected a 15-3 win. Also Nominated: Ben Hildreth, Averett; Kenny Moreland, Christopher Newport; Elliott Bisplinghoff, Methodist; Kyle Robertson, N.C. Wesleyan.

Softball Player of the Week
         Rebekah Kelly, Methodist - The senior centerfielder from Fayetteville, North Carolina hit .667 (10-for-15) with 11 runs scored, one run batted in, eight walks, three triples and one stolen base as the Monarchs went 6-0 last week. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South rival Meredith, Kelly was a combined 2-for-2 with four runs scored, one run batted in, five walks and one stolen base. In a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Wesleyan, Kelly was a combined 3-for-7 with three runs scored, two walks and one triple. Finally, in a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Ferrum, Kelly was a combined 5-for-6 with four runs scored, two triples and one walk. Kelly's three triples this week give her ten on the season which is a new Methodist single-season record. Also Nominated: Hayley Brooks, Averett; Jolisa Jones, Shenandoah; Libby Fulford, N.C. Wesleyan; Kenni Seagroves, Peace; Mary Kennedy, Christopher Newport.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
         Lesley Hewitt, Methodist - The Garner, North Carolina junior appeared in three games for the Monarchs last week, earning a win in each contest. Hewitt tossed a total of 18.1 innings, giving up three runs on 18 hits with four walks and 18 strikeouts. In a 6-0 over USA South rival Meredith, Hewitt earned the win by going five innings without giving a run on three hits with seven strikeouts. In a 1-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Hewitt again did not allow a run in 6.1 innings on eight hits with three strikeouts. Finally, in a 6-3 victory over USA South foe Ferrum, Hewitt went the distance, giving up three runs on seven hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. Also Nominated: Lindsay Kelly, Christopher Newport; Katie Haskins, Shenandoah; Sandra Dennison, Averett.

Lacrosse Player of the Week
         Katie Doherty, Christopher Newport - The Fairfax, Virginia junior midfielder totaled nine points on seven goals and two assists as the Captains went 2-2 last week. In a 12-11, overtime, win over Buffalo State, Doherty collected four draw controls and one ground ball. In a 9-6 loss to Virginia Wesleyan, Doherty scored twice with one assist and three ground balls. In a 17-14 loss to Catholic, Doherty totaled three goals, one assist, four ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control. Finally, in a 15-1 win over USA South foe Ferrum, Doherty scored two goals while collecting three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Also Nominated: Andrea DiStefano, Methodist.

Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
         Morgan Layton, Christopher Newport - The Ocean City, Maryland freshman defender helped the Captains to a 2-2 record last week by collecting four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw control. Layton also scored once and added two assists in the four contests. Layton assisted a Captain defense that held USA South rival Ferrum to just one goal in a 15-1 victory.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
        Chris Fletcher, Methodist - The New Castle, New Hampshire senior was 2-0 at number-one singles and 1-1 at number-one doubles last week for the Monarchs. Fletcher earned singles victories over top players from Ferrum and Hampden-Sydney. In doubles action, Fletcher teamed with Matthew Taylor to earn a victory over Ferrum.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
        Tiffany Tucker, Methodist - The Circleville, Ohio senior was 3-0 at both number-one singles and doubles last week for the Monarchs. Tucker earned singles victories over top players from USA South foes Meredith and Ferrum, as well as, non-conference opponent Hampden-Sydney. In doubles action, Tucker teamed with Jenny Smith to earn the three victories. Also Nominated: Morgan Martin, Meredith; Frannie Shivar, Christopher Newport.

Golfer of the Week
          Nick Bova, Methodist - The senior from Bloomington, Illinois shot a four-under par 210 to win the Marine Corps Intercollegiate in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina this past weekend. Bova led the Monarchs to another first place finish in the three-day tournament which featured four USA South squads. Bova began the tournament with a three-under par 69 on the Gold Course, then a four-under par 66 on the Scarlet Course before finishing with a three-over par 75 back on the Gold Course. The win is Bova's third of the spring. Also Nominated: Brad Hartman, Averett.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
         Greg Van Sickler, Shenandoah - The freshman outfielder from Stephenson, Virginia hit .429 (6-for-14) with five runs scored, five RBI and two walks last week for the Hornets. In an 11-9 loss to Lynchburg, Van Sickler was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one run batted in and one walk. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe Ferrum, Van Sickler was a combined 4-for-10 with four RBI, three runs scored and one walk. Also Nominated: Adam Higgins, Averett; Daniel Moore, N.C. Wesleyan.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
         Andrew Webb, N.C. Wesleyan - The Rocky Mount, North Carolina freshman collected a victory in his only appearance last week for the Bishops. In a 6-4, ten-inning, win over USA South rival Averett, Webb entered in the ninth inning with runners on first and third and no outs. Webb proceeded to get out of the jam and eventually earn the win. In total, Webb pitched two innings, giving up no runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Also Nominated: David Acosta, Christopher Newport.

Softball Rookie of the Week
         Morgan Weathington, Peace - The freshman catcher from Raleigh, North Carolina hit .571 (4-for-7) with one run batted in and one double as the Pacers went 3-1 last week. In a doubleheader split with USA South foe Christopher Newport, Weathington was a combined 4-for-5 with one run batted in and one double. Also Nominated: Jessie Atkinson, Christopher Newport; Hannah Stutts, Methodist; Jalisa Poe, Ferrum; Emily New, Averett; Catherine Pruiett, Shenandoah.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
        Jennie Price, Methodist - The freshman from Goldston, North Carolina appeared in two games for the Monarchs last week, earning a victory in each contest. Price tossed a total of 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, none of which were earned, on three hits with two strikeouts. In a 20-0, five-inning, win over USA South foe Meredith, Price pitched the first three innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout. In an 8-7 win over Virginia Wesleyan, Price entered in the seventh inning with Methodist down a run. The Monarchs proceeded to tie the score and eventually win as Price finished with 3.1 innings pitched, giving up two unearned runs on two hits with one strikeout.

Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
       Sara Mucciaro, Shenandoah - The freshman midfielder from Annandale, Virginia scored a game-high eight goals and added two assists for ten points in a 17-16 victory over Hood in the Hornets only action last week. Also Nominated: Meghan Harkey, Christopher Newport; Chrystal Bradley, Methodist.

Men's Tennis Rookie Player of the Week
      Xavier Ruiz, Averett - The Guayaquil, Ecuador freshman was 2-0 at number-three singles and 1-1 at number-one doubles last week for the Cougars. Ruiz earned singles victories over players from Hampden-Sydney and USA South foe Greensboro. In doubles action, Ruiz teamed with Marcelo Diaz to earn a victory over Greensboro. Also Nominated: John Hartin, Ferrum; Ricky Connor, Christopher Newport.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
        Kaitlin Flaherty, Methodist - The League City, Texas freshman went 3-0 at number-two singles and 2-1 at number-two doubles last week for the Monarchs. Flaherty earned singles victories over top players from USA South foes Meredith and Ferrum, as well as, non-conference opponent Hampden-Sydney. In doubles action, Flaherty teamed with Leighton Bull victories over Huntingdon and Ferrum. Also Nominated: Lisa Dyke, Christopher Newport; Cuyler Wells, Meredith.

Golf Rookie of the Week
         Matt Wagner, Christopher Newport - The freshman from LaPlata, Maryland shot an nine-over par 221 at the Marine Corps Intercollegiate in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina this past weekend. Wagner began the tournament with a six-over par 76 on the Scarlet Course, then a five-over par 77 on the Gold Course before finishing with a two-under par 68 back on the Scarlet Course.
