CNU Captures Second Consecutive Baseball Crown
(BURLINGTON, N.C.) - Top-seeded Christopher Newport captured the USA South Baseball Tournament championship with a 7-4 win over second-seeded Shenandoah on Sunday, April 15 in Burlington, North Carolina. The Captains earn the program's second consecutive Conference Tournament crown.
Shenandoah took an early 3-0 lead after two innings of play but CNU battled back. The Captains scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to get within one run. The Hornets added a run in the sixth while the Captains answered with one of their own in the seventh. CNU then took the lead in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Steven Keener. The Captains added two more insurance runs in the eighth to earn the three-run win. CNU's catcher, Ben Lenda, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in to help the Captain cause. For his efforts during the tournament, Lenda was named the Most Valuable Player.
